Sovereign-Ready, Unified, Insight‑Driven Cloud Operations: What’s New in Nutanix Cloud Manager 2.x

Next-Gen Capabilities for Sovereign-Ready, Multi‑Site Cloud Management

By Mayank Gupta, Director Hybrid Cloud GTM, and Amit Gupta Sr. Director Product Management

Modern IT teams are grappling with fragmented hybrid operations, the need for control of data and management infrastructure that supports digital sovereignty and regulatory requirements, and blind spots that limit visibility across the entire estate. Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) 2.x (2.0 & upcoming 2.1) is built for that reality, giving IT practitioners and leaders a unified platform to Build, Operate, and Govern across Nutanix and VMware environments with sovereign deployment options and richer insights.

With NCM2.x (2.0 & upcoming 2.1), Nutanix brings together its various modules into a single experience that runs on-premises via Nutanix Central, scales to multi-site estates, and enhances observability and self-service customization. The result is a single platform that can meet the requirements of global enterprises and service providers without forcing trade-offs between control, speed, and flexibility.

Sovereign control with enterprise‑grade resilience

This is about running your management plane on your terms: fully under your control, architected for high availability, and backed by cost visibility that reflects the true economics of your private cloud.

  • Easy and Unified NC-NCM deployment: Now NCM 2.0 runs inside Nutanix Central On‑Premises, giving you full ownership of the management plane while preserving a single, unified platform experience for operations, self‑service, and cost governance across your hybrid estate.
  • Keep Your Control Plane Resilient and Recoverable: Built‑in backup and restore protect NCM configuration data, with the option to restore onto the same or a new cluster and to schedule backups so critical policies and configurations can be recovered quickly after incidents.
  • Bring Financial Clarity to Your Private Cloud: Cost Governance applies a Total Cost of Ownership model that aggregates hardware, software, facilities, telecom, services, and people costs to derive realistic unit costs such as cost per VM per hour, with enhancements for snapshot metering, vSphere licensing alignment, and simplified term‑based setup.

With this new NCM on Nutanix Central deployment option, we’re making it easier for large-scale enterprises to Build‑Operate‑Govern their clouds from a single cloud management platform that is sovereign‑ready, unified across sites, and insight‑driven for automation at any scale.

Unified operations at scale across sites

This focuses on turning a collection of Prism Centrals and vCenters into a coherent multi‑site estate, managed through one experience that simplifies onboarding, observability, and operations at scale.

  • One Set of Policies for Every Cluster, Every Site: In one of the bigger milestones, NCM 2.0 evolves into a multi‑site manager that spans multiple Prism Centrals and VMware vCenters, centralizing VM and cluster inventory, alerts, events, audits, and AIOps signals so you can define alert policies and playbooks once and apply them across domains. With Multi-PC management, you aggregate data across providers and accounts, allowing teams to understand where to place workloads, how expansions will impact resources, and how migrations or consolidations will change their capacity posture.
  • Common Account Onboarding Service: A new Common Account Onboarding Service introduces a single, automated workflow to add multiple Prism Central domains as “accounts” in NCM, handling pre‑flight checks, resource configuration, and secure data pipelines to streamline Day‑0 and Day‑1 setup.
  • Enterprise Capabilities, Sized for Your Environment:  NCM 2.0 offers a medium form factor for environments up to roughly 10,000 VMs and a small form factor (in upcoming NCM 2.1) for environments of about 2,500 VMs, both delivering full Build‑Operate‑Govern capabilities with Nutanix Central while aligning to different resource profiles and customer segments.

Greater insights and automation efficiency

This is about elevating the signals that matter, standardizing automation inputs, and tailoring observability and self‑service so different teams can move faster with confidence.

  • Monitor Business, Not Just Infra Stats:  NCM 2.0 adds more than 50 out‑of‑the‑box derived metrics that provide pre‑aggregated capacity, cluster, and host insights across compute, storage, and memory, including combination metrics like memory allocated to powered‑on VMs to support proactive planning and optimization.
  • Global Variables for automation at scale: Global Variables introduce a centralized, governed layer for automation inputs in NCM Self‑Service, allowing variables to be defined once and reused across blueprints and runbooks, with changes automatically reflected wherever they are referenced.
  • Custom Metrics (coming soon): Teams define business‑aligned KPIs using base platform metrics, mathematical operations, and flexible filters, and then plug those metrics into analytics and automation for proactive, environment‑specific alerting and remediation.
  • Custom Dashboards (coming soon): Enables role‑ and use‑case‑specific views with rich visualization options, drill‑downs, thresholds, and one‑click reporting so operators, admins, and leaders can each see and act on the insights most relevant to them.
  • Custom Forms in Self‑Service (coming soon): Custom Forms allow tailored launch experiences for blueprints and runbooks, hiding irrelevant or overly technical parameters from end users while still capturing the information and enforcing the controls required by operations and security teams.

A next‑generation Build‑Operate‑Govern platform

Nutanix Cloud Manager 2.x advances NCM as a next‑generation Build‑Operate‑Govern platform that is sovereign‑ready, unified for multi‑site scale, and insight‑driven for automation. By bringing domains, workloads, and cost signals into one place and offering flexible deployment and observability options, NCM 2.x helps IT teams move faster with confidence, whether they are operating a single region or a globally distributed, sovereignty‑sensitive estate.
