Tidying up Your Datacenter

By Ines Marjanovic

Do you greet your datacenter when you walk in? Do you thank your nodes, racks, and cables for all the hard work they’ve done? Do you neatly arrange your hardware so it’s clearly visible and accessible?

While Marie Kondo, expert tidier, author, and host of Netflix’s Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, likely hasn’t applied her solutions to the datacenter, your home-away-from-home can certainly use a KonMari-style clean-up. Her method boils down to one question: “Does this spark joy?” From there, the steps are simple: If yes, keep the item. If not, thank it and get rid of it.

Consider us the Marie Kondo of your datacenter. But before we dive into tidying tips, let’s give you a little bit of visual inspiration to get the gears going.

Oooh.

Get the gist? IT people love their cable arrangements, and we can see why! Smooth lines, color-grouped cords, and intricate weaving are all pleasing to the eye. But too often, IT teams are plagued with complex mountains of jumbled cables—not to mention racks, separate servers, multiple vendors, and specialists to manage it all. In reality, the hidden mess is software complexity.

Ready to make that disappear? Let’s take a look at some of the tactics you can use to tidy up your datacenter.

Cut Complexity Whenever Possible

Over-rotating your hardware means it’s much harder to identify a datacenter troublemaker. In fact, 89% of businesses claim their IT environment is too complex. Separate management consoles, excess racks, overwhelming cables, and other clutter create an environment that’s painful to work in.

The goal of the KonMari method is to create a tidy, delightful environment—and to do so as fast as possible. So, here are our tips: Reduce management overhead, prioritize automation, and opt for one-click simplicity.

Look to your infrastructure to achieve all three goals. Opting for hyperconverged solutions means you’re elevated to focus on business innovation, not babysitting complex systems. Plus, it leverages machine-learning intelligence to take the grunt work of lengthy upgrades off your shoulders, simplifies management, and helps predict failures.

It is infrastructure Marie Kondo would be proud of: Streamlined, faster, and joy-sparking.

Optimize your Resources

Many businesses on legacy infrastructure face a dilemma when it comes to purchasing resources. Chances are, you’re prepaying for resources—meaning you’re likely to overbuy and overprovision resources so you don’t run out halfway. Sure, you’re well insured, but in the long-run, this is hard on your wallet and leaves you with shelfware.

The tidying solution? The fractional consumption model. Commonly referred to as the “pay-as-you-grow” model, fractional consumption lets you purchase resources when you need them vs making bad guesses about the future—reducing waste and lowering your total costs.

But the KonMari method is just as much about organizing as it is about tidying. And for Marie, she believes clarity and visibility are key. Prism Central delivers infrastructure visibility, capacity planning, and needs forecasting to keep you in the loop on your resources.

Free yourself from Fees

Two words: Software licenses. One question: Are you still paying for virtualization? Clutter isn’t just a physical issue; too often, businesses’ budgets are spent on bundled shelfware, unexpected true-ups and expensive licensing fees. It’s a mess to allocate budgets for surprise costs. And most importantly, it definitely doesn’t spark joy.

That’s why we believe virtualization should be included in the stack, not offered as a premium add-on. It’s simplicity in action: Fewer extras means less clutter and less stress.

Unnecessary spend can also come from datacenter footprint issues, like power and cooling costs. And if you’re using a hybrid or multi-cloud model, poor visibility can create sticker shock.

Following the tidying-up process, the second half of the KonMari method is organization. Namely, Marie Kondo stresses that the best way to organize anything is to first lay everything out in one easy-to-see layer. Nutanix Beam has a similar mission, giving you ultimate visibility into your multi-cloud cost and compliance and making sure everything is ship-shape.

Right-Size your Infrastructure

Clutter isn’t always about the amount of items you have. If your infrastructure takes up more space than it needs to, you end up with waste and often a larger datacenter footprint. Reducing your footprint is one of the top reasons companies are opting for hyperconverged infrastructure.

Migrating to hyperconverged solutions doesn’t just clean up your IT operations—it (literally) cleans up your datacenter.

Take Empire Life, a life and health insurer, for example. By replacing their existing stack with Nutanix, they were able to slash their datacenter footprint from a high 192U to 12U. That’s a 16:1 reduction!

Oh, and they had the most incredible send off for their mainframe:

Find What Sparks Joy in your Datacenter

In terms of your datacenter, you can’t simply pick up each and every cord or rack and ask if it sparks joy. Instead, you can modify the heart of her method to ask, “What sparks joy for me in my datacenter?”

  • Is it the instantaneous deployment?
  • What about the minute-long, not week-long upgrades?
  • Maybe it’s the effortless, incremental scaling?
  • Or is it simply not having to be in the datacenter at all hours?

If you’re missing out on those benefits, new joy in your datacenter could be right around the corner. Start experiencing the magic of a powerful (and tidy) datacenter today with a free test drive!
