Today we announced Nutanix Calm, a generational addition coming to the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform, providing application automation and lifecycle management spanning cloud environments, including both Nutanix-powered private clouds and public clouds. Calm builds on our proven web-scale software platform to make the entire IT infrastructure more agile and application centric.
Why is Nutanix extending its Prism infrastructure management to include application automation and orchestration? Simple. Nutanix was founded to improve overall IT responsiveness by making infrastructure easier to build and consume. The goal, of course, is to enable more rapid innovation and drive the business faster.
Application development and delivery, however, is often a resisting force pushing against increased IT velocity – with applications growing in number and in complexity, built from an increasing number of components and running across diverse platforms. It’s a thorny problem as ownership of applications is fragmented, yielding multiple siloes whose processes disrupt one another. The result is finger pointing, higher response times and longer release cycles. Hybrid environments add incremental complexity since private and public platforms are non-interoperable, requiring a separate set of management tools.
With Calm, we’re taking a new approach. One that automates all aspects of how applications are created, consumed and governed across the infrastructure stack, melding application-level orchestration with a cloud-driven infrastructure. This approach addresses both technology and process-driven challenges, fostering better collaboration and rapid application delivery across the organization.
Repeatable Automation is Key
Calm offers a simple way to model applications in a logical and visual construct: app blueprints. Blueprints capture all elements of each application including VMs, related binaries, sequence of operations and configurations – everything needed to provision an application. Blueprints are created using a visually-compelling UI that dramatically simplifies the process of defining and automating lifecycle operations.
Calm’s application blueprints also span multiple teams and IT disciplines, capturing the latest organizational knowledge so that best practices can be shared and institutionalized. When blueprints are triggered, Calm initiates the provisioning process by automating the steps needed for deployment, and ensures reliable execution by taking into account the entire application, including the latest binaries and configuration details.
Similarly, other lifecycle operations such as scaling and upgrades are fully captured in Calm blueprints, making them easily repeatable, so that infrastructure teams can eliminate the days and months devoted to routine application management.
Empower Your Team with Self-Service
Beyond streamlining IT operations, Calm opens new self service possibilities. Blueprints can be published directly to end users through the Nutanix Marketplace – a central location for one-click deployments. IT managers can utilize pre-integrated blueprints that are offered by Nutanix and variety of partners to simplify the set-up of popular applications.
In addition, any custom blueprint can be published to the Marketplace, enabling IT to offer other groups one-click, self-service provisioning of any application.
Calm also provides role-based governance that limits user operations based on user role, and all critical activities and changes are logged for end-to-end traceability. This means that different internal IT teams, such as application developers or lines of business, can deploy and manage the specific applications permitted to those groups. Central IT can, for instance, assign employees in the dev team permission to create, scale and destroy dev/test environments without filing IT ticket requests. Development teams benefit from rapid provisioning times, while IT maintains control, traceability of user operations and visibility into resource consumption.
Any App, Any Cloud
With Calm, Hybrid Cloud management becomes simple. Blueprints capture all elements of the application, so cloud destination becomes just another variable. In fact, a blueprint can be deployed in either the enterprise cloud or a public environment like AWS. Utilizing role based access controls, IT can provide specific groups with permission to deploy in either cloud or both.
What about the cost of cloud? By assigning costs to resources within a blueprint, organizations get a consolidated view of resource consumption and costs. When applied to multiple environments, Calm provides a simple way to understand the overall utilization and true cost of public cloud consumption.
One Platform, with an Open Approach
Calm will be integrated into the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform, and delivered via Prism. Customers can scale their Calm deployment to support increasing numbers of VMs by purchasing separate Calm licenses. There are no separate products that require independent management. No new consoles to learn. And, all of the Nutanix platform goodness like one-click software upgrades gets inherited by Calm.
And, we’re keeping it open. Calm will integrate with many tools in your environment, so getting started is easy. Begin with automation of common lifecycle activities, gradually grow into multi-step processes and eventually design complex blueprints that span multiple environments and teams.
Nutanix Calm is extremely versatile. It enables you manage the development, production and scaling of applications across your multi-cloud environment. Increase IT efficiency Improve application uptime. Drive rapid delivery of new applications and services.
