Migration to Nutanix Cloud Platform (NCP) cuts server footprint, eliminates downtime during maintenance, and boosts performance for core business systems.
RE&S faced productivity challenges due to IT instability and frequent downtime. To resolve this, the company migrated its physical data center to Nutanix, consolidating critical business applications onto a single four-node cluster. As a result, the business eliminated downtime to improve efficiency, accelerated performance for better decision-making, and obtained a modern infrastructure anticipated to deliver a better ROI than a cloud migration alternative.
Greater stability
Minimized downtime risk with a resilient foundation for business operations
Better decision-making
Fast IT performance improves access to information staff rely on
Lower cost
Expected 3-year ROI with Nutanix beat cloud migration alternative
Nutanix gave us the stability, flexibility, and predictable pricing we couldn’t get elsewhere. It lets us grow without being locked in or exposed to unpredictable costs.
Headquartered in Singapore, RE&S specializes in Japanese cuisine. The food & beverage (F&B) group operates more than 70 outlets across Singapore and Malaysia, offering sit-down Japanese dining, quick-service food stores and a retail presence. Its central kitchen and procurement operation also supplies Japanese food items to other restaurants. With 1,500 employees, RE&S is diversifying its restaurant formats and seeking to expand in Malaysia.
With IT instability impacting business operations, RE&S set out to transform its infrastructure. Hardware outages could bring down critical applications for up to half a day, limiting employee productivity. The IT team was unable to scale resources without taking services offline, forcing them to work irregular hours. “The option of moving everything to the cloud was on the table, but we strongly preferred a CapEx model for cost predictability and asset ownership,” says Adrian Tan, senior information technology manager at RE&S.
A plan to migrate systems to a VMware based hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) solution was considered but then rejected. RE&S was concerned about VMware’s roadmap following the Broadcom acquisition and the possibility of price increases. Furthermore, the solution was tied to the vendor’s hardware. "It lacked the flexibility we were looking for—effectively locking us in," comments Tan.
For such technology investment decisions, Tan deliberated on a few factors, “We want a partner that can work with us for a long term, have a clear roadmap for the next five years and could even weather certain geopolitical risks,” said Tan. Nutanix offered RE&S the stability and flexibility it wanted without the risk and no hardware vendor lock-in. “Nutanix gave us predictable pricing, helping us to plan IT development better.”
With the decision made, RE&S deployed a four-node Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) cluster in its Singapore data center to support critical applications. This included the AOS Storage solution, the AHV hypervisor, and the Nutanix Prism management console. The company then migrated its enterprise resource planning (ERP) application and database over to Nutanix, along with its restaurant order management service, and file server.
IT stability provides resilient foundation for day-to-day business operations
Downtime risk has been eliminated thanks to no single points of failure, allowing staff to work uninterrupted throughout the day. The IT team can complete maintenance work in regular office hours without service disruption, seamlessly moving workloads between the four Nutanix nodes. “The IT team no longer faces the stress of having to constantly handle “firefighting” incidents and outages. They are now more assured, knowing our cluster self-heals if an outage occurs. Both IT staff and employees can get on with their work. Nutanix has given us the confidence that the environment will stay operational even during maintenance or hardware issues,” Tan said.
3 times cost avoidance and 3-year ROI
The company reports reduced costs and improved return on investment (ROI) with Nutanix. By avoiding a move to a hyperscaler, “we would breakeven in two years and start reaping ROI in our third year,” said Tan. “Within a couple of years, we’ll be paying less money with Nutanix than we would with the cloud,” says Tan. Additionally, choosing AHV over VMware delivered major savings—helping the business avoid a potential 3-times price increase.
Fast performance improves decision quality
Personnel can access reports fast and retrieve data quickly now that IT flexes to meet workforce needs. Moving from spinning disks to high-speed NVMe storage has increased data throughput, and the IT team can dynamically add compute capacity as requirements change. As a result, applications perform better, giving staff the tools they need to improve decision-making. “Personnel may not say anything to us, but they see our systems performing faster. There are no complaints,” states Tan.
73% smaller footprint reduces energy use
IT is now more aligned with RE&S’s sustainability goals thanks to the Nutanix move. RE&S reports that the data center footprint is now 73 percent smaller, having reduced from 15 physical servers to 4 Nutanix nodes. This, in turn, has reduced both the cost of powering and cooling the facility. “Our IT is much more sustainable with Nutanix, with IT consuming a lot less energy and generating much less heat. Before Nutanix, we were on the verge of ordering two more aircons that would cost about USD 30k, so now all that is saved,” said Tan.
Future-ready infrastructure can drive growth
Regardless of the RE&S business strategy, the IT team can provide the support it needs with Nutanix. Using Prism, the team can accurately forecast future compute, memory, and storage requirements to enable business expansion. On top of that, it can seamlessly scale the infrastructure to support growth with ease.
With its Malaysian business expected to grow, RE&S is considering deploying a second Nutanix cluster in Malaysia to support local operations and provide disaster recovery for the Singapore data center. The company also expects to integrate Nutanix into its AI strategy. “We’re exploring some use cases that will leverage Nutanix to unlock the potential of AI for our business,” says Tan. “Nutanix gives us the ability to scale without disruption, which is essential as we introduce more data analytics and prepare for AI. With a stable foundation in place, we can evolve how we run the business.”
