Challenges

Since 2001, Expedient has built an exemplary reputation as a leading innovator in managed service offerings. With 15 data centers across the U.S., the company helps its customers transform IT operations through a potent combination of national reach and localized expertise. Its customer-centric approach is based on providing a complete array of services that free up customers to focus on their business.

“We are very focused on being the best private cloud provider—period—through either dedicated or shared environments,” said Anthony Jackman, Chief Innovation Officer at Expedient. “That also binds us to being the best at a number of other things, including disaster recovery (DR), because if you can't do DR, you can't really claim to be a great service provider. Many of our customers are specifically asking about disaster recovery as well as cyber recovery, so we are continually developing solutions around that.”

Expedient strives to innovate fast to stay ahead of industry trends, maintaining a strategic focus on advanced new technologies such as AI.

“We’re enabling our clients to take advantage of AI to solve business challenges, and we have a product set that enables our clients to rapidly get moving with AI and get value out of it,” said Jackman. “Our focus is also on connecting all of a company's existing data to AI, which we are doing today, and we will see continued product expansion over the coming year. That requires us to focus on rapid innovation and on being the best at efficiency and automation—which ultimately results in a higher service level and a lower price for our clients.”

For example, the CIO for one Expedient client was instructed to "do AI." Expedient not only supplied a cost effective, simple, solution, but helped document specific use cases to quickly show ROI to the board. Another client wanted to adopt AI but was worried about their data being used for training. They’d looked at private models but the client thought cost was high—and also required substantial development. Jackman reported the successful outcome: Expedient AI CTRL allowed the client to use public models with a fully featured chat interface at a fraction of the cost and with the data privacy they required.

Expedient had been a longtime user of Nutanix solutions, and has steadily expanded its use of a wide range of Nutanix products to meet customers’ increased interest in DR.

“Our history told us that Nutanix was a great company to work with, had really good technology, and most importantly, was highly stable and performant,” said Jackman. “We decided to go down the path of fully embracing Nutanix, adopting their entire stack, and running AHV-based clouds because we were already confident in the foundation of their technology.”

Expedient and Nutanix have established a close partnership through the Nutanix Elevate Service Provider program, which offers Business Development Funds (BDF) and other benefits that unlock rapid pipeline growth and help partners accelerate time to close.

“We are a Premier Provider with Nutanix and participate in the program,” said Jackman. “From a development perspective, we are also a design partner with Nutanix on a number of upcoming solutions, including a design partnership with the solution Nutanix announced  with Pure Storage, and active testing of Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) cloud-native modernization solutions. There's also a strong partnership between the Expedient team and the Nutanix sales team, and that partnership is expected to grow. Nutanix is almost like an extension of our team, and I think we work very well together.”

Many people at Expedient believe that Nutanix is our favorite vendor partner. It has been extremely stable and helps us support the 100 percent service SLA that we offer clients. We don't have performance challenges with Nutanix—it always works really well.

Solutions

As part of its wider adoption of Nutanix solutions, Expedient offers Nutanix disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS) to hundreds of clients. This solution lets clients take advantage of the powerful disaster recovery capabilities Nutanix offers. The solution offers DR orchestration to achieve reliable execution of failover processes and low Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs). Data remains safe with the solution’s end-to-end security using strong encryption for data at-rest, and built-in encrypted connections between sites for data in-flight.

Expedient works closely with clients to ensure that the solution is fully aligned with their IT resiliency goals, while offering different tiers of recovery point and recovery time objectives.

“Before they become a client, organizations often believe that they have DR, but when you take a closer look, they don’t, and their confidence level is not always the highest,” said Jackman. “We pride ourselves on providing a complete DR solution. Before we consider a project delivered upfront, we conduct real scheduled DR tests with customers so that they know it will actually work.”

Expedient also conducts ongoing scheduled DR tests with clients to verify its real-world effectiveness.

“Our clients need to know not only that the technology and solution from us works, but that the rest of their business processes are in place to make sure that it really delivers what they need,” said Jackman. “That sounds like that shouldn't be a differentiator, but it is.”

The Expedient DR offering complements a full range of Nutanix powered offerings, including private cloud services, as well as Expedient Edge, an end-to-end compute platform built to run workloads at edge locations on redundant hardware with remote management and support.

The Nutanix DRaaS service offering not only enables Expedient to meet its customers’ demands for business continuity but also helps Expedient achieve its goals of improved efficiency and automation.

One of the best parts of the solution is that DR is simply a part of the platform, which means that are not a lot of other hoops we have to jump through to make it work, and we can focus on the higher value things of returning service to our clients

“But over the years, Nutanix has continued to integrate more capabilities into DR, and network security is always a concern. The last thing you want to do in a DR event is spend time worrying whether you have opened a security gap. The platform approach is definitely valuable from that perspective.”

Nutanix also provides flexibility to support Expedient’s co-management service options.

“The solution is easier to understand for our clients,” said Jackman. “If our clients want to call us in the event of a disaster, we will fail it over on their behalf. But we also enable self service for our clients, because in some situations they prefer not to call us. The easier and cleaner the solution, the better the experience. they. They need us less, and they like that level of flexibility.”

So the cleanness and the integration and the historical stability and performance of Nutanix platforms are what really make us confident in its disaster recovery capabilities.

Expedient also appreciates the Nutanix solution because it fits well with existing services for many current customers.

“When clients are coming to us, many are already Nutanix clients, and they understand the platform and they enjoy it,” said Jackman. “But they also want to prevent a large capital expenditure for something that is critical but hopefully will never need to be used. That fits really well into the as-a-service model, and we can also give our clients some flexibility in terms of resources and licensing that they may not have access to on their own. More importantly, they can be confident that we will be there for them as a partner to make sure that their disaster recovery plan will actually work.”

In some situations, Nutanix DR can also open up new revenue opportunities by giving Expedient customers a chance to experiment with new service offerings as part of a long-term cloud migration path. This approach lets them experience the value of more advanced cloud solutions, without a major up-front commitment.

“A lot of our customers will start with us with disaster recovery,” said Jackman. “They're confident that they can fail over, we have run DR tests, and they run production with us a couple of times a year for a few days, and we become their path to cloud. At some point, they might decide they don’t want to be in the data center business anymore. We'll configure multi-site replication for them, and they'll fail over into our data center as if it were a DR event. Now their data is already protected at another one of our data centers. They shut down their production site and they've painlessly moved to a full cloud operating model. That's very common for us.”

Expedient’s broad array of Nutanix-powered service offerings, coupled with its deep service expertise, have enabled several customers to achieve impressive business outcomes.

As an example, Jackman reported that one client,  a major contracting organization, faced an expiring lease and the need to relocate their production environment—which ran on Nutanix. The client was seeking an alternative to maintaining an on-prem data center at their new headquarters. Additionally, with Nutanix Xi-Leap (their disaster recovery solution) sunsetting, they needed a robust replacement for DR capabilities.

Expedient emerged as the partner of choice for several reasons:

  • Comprehensive solution portfolio: Expedient was uniquely positioned to offer both colocation for their production environment and cloud-based Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) on Nutanix, unlike competitors that could not deliver such an integrated approach.
  • Nutanix expertise: Expedient’s demonstrated experience and champion partner status with Nutanix reassured the client of seamless migration, operational continuity, and ongoing support for their preferred platform.
  •  White glove delivery: Expedient committed to a high-touch, white glove onboarding and migration process with a focus on meeting the client’s tight delivery timeline—an essential differentiator given the client’s aggressive schedule.
  • Discovery-driven value: Through a tailored discovery process, Expedient identified the client’s need for a Xi-Leap alternative, expanding the solution and shortening their migration timeline, thus amplifying the value delivered.
  •  Client references & facilities: Expedient’s proven track record—reinforced by direct client references and facility tours—demonstrated their commitment to reliability, redundancy, and uptime.

Ultimately, the client selected Expedient for their ability to deliver all necessary hosting needs across workloads and to simplify the transition with Nutanix-powered services, allowing the client’s IT team to focus on strategic initiatives rather than day-to-day infrastructure management.

As another example, an Expedient client in the construction equipment rental and sales business, needed a reliable partner to safeguard their critical applications in the event of a disaster. With a small IT team stretched to capacity, the client lacked confidence in its existing DR plan, and sought a comprehensive and tested solution that would help minimize business risk and give their executives peace of mind.

Expedient was selected for several key reasons:

  • Partnership approach: Expedient invested time in building genuine trust and rapport with the client’s entire team, ensuring everyone was comfortable with the proposed solution and aware of their roles moving forward. This collaborative approach stood out and made the client feel supported.
  • Comprehensive, tested solution: The client recognized that Expedient’s solution was meticulously designed, thoroughly verified, and tailored to their specific needs—a sharp contrast to a competitor’s generic, cost-first proposal.
  • Business alignment: Expedient’s process-driven engagement addressed the client’s business-critical questions, giving their internal champion the confidence to present a well-structured, executable DR plan to company leadership.

According to Jackman, this valued client ultimately chose Expedient not just for its technology, but for the trust, accountability, and peace of mind delivered throughout the process—securing their business and empowering their IT team to focus on what matters most.

Next Steps

Expedient is continuing to build on its strong strategic relationship with Nutanix, and the two companies are working closely together to extend market reach and drive product development.

“We are an early access and design partner on a couple of new solutions, including a design partnership with Pure Storage, which will deliver high-performance, scalable storage for virtualized workloads on Nutanix,” said Jackman. “We are also collaborating on Nutanix’s service provider multi-tenancy solution that will inherently expand our product capabilities.”

Expedient is also working closely with Nutanix to support its anticipated new AI service offerings.

In the future, small purpose-built language models that enable agentic AI are going to become very important, and we need to be the best at running them at scale, cost effectively, in a secure manner. If I can tie that and run it on the same platform that the rest of that customer's workload runs on, it creates a really good experience for that customer. We certainly expect to be working closely with Nutanix on AI over the next year.
