Maximizing Gaming Returns and Minimizing Risk in a Post-Pandemic World

The last two years were a wakeup call for the gaming, hospitality and entertainment industry. Lockdowns and other pandemic-related disruptions saw casinos and hotels operating far below normal levels—or completely shuttered—and the vast majority of in-person events canceled. As a result, millions of dollars of capital equipment ended up sitting idle, adding to the losses.

As operations rebound from the recent upheaval, casinos must work hard to pay back technical debt to support existing in-house gaming and expanded offerings like enhanced guest experiences, eSports and mobile gaming. This includes smartly leveraging a cloud operating model to deliver IT more resources more efficiently while reducing fixed capital expenses.

Nutanix, a leader in cloud infrastructure software, and Capgemini, known globally for consulting, digital transformation and technology services, have joined forces to address the challenges of gaming and hospitality.

As a founding sponsor and technology provider for Black Fire Innovation at the UNLV School of Gaming, an active member of the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers (AGEM), and a board-level member of the American Gaming Association (AGA), Nutanix helps gaming companies eliminate infrastructure complexity and increase agility.

As veterans in helping the gaming industry, both companies aim to simplify how casinos deliver the critical IT infrastructure and cloud resources to meet critical needs. And do it while reducing risks and costs—all without sacrificing security, innovation or the ability to satisfy peak demand.

Why Should CFOs and Ops Teams Care about the Cloud?

To ensure performance and security, casinos have traditionally owned and operated all the computing equipment necessary to support front- and back-of-house operations. However, because demand fluctuates dramatically, equipment ends up underutilized much of the time. But in a post COVID-19 world, it is commonly agreed that it is no longer feasible to equip casino operations with all the computing infrastructure capacity necessary to support the the big increase in gaming that occurs on weekends and New Year’s Eve.

Smart use of cloud infrastructure can lower the total cost of IT operations, increase the agility of business, and reduce potential losses due to further disruptions—all while meeting rigorous security requirements and accelerating innovation.

This is the premise of a smart gaming approach. It utilizes onsite cloud infrastructure for high-value gaming workloads and compliance workloads, maximizing the return on CAPEX. Elastic workloads and less important, unplanned workloads run offsite in the cloud infrastructure and are treated as opex. Back-of-house workloads are hosted and managed at the offsite cloud infrastructure—but move over to onsite clouds when capital equipment is idle. This unique flexibility scales offsite resources to satisfy peak demands that occur on weekends and New Year’s Eve. Licenses move flexibly between locations.
