AOS Storage

A Modern Storage Fabric

AOS Storage, the core of the Nutanix Cloud Platform, replaces SAN and NAS with automated, software-defined storage that scales on-prem and in the cloud.

Modern storage for all applications at any scale

AOS Storage is the scale-out storage technology that makes HCI and cloud possible, delivering enterprise-grade capabilities via a highly distributed software architecture

Performance

High performance software-defined architecture using modern storage media, like NVMe, delivers speeds similar to a SAN.

Resilience

Advanced software algorithms protect data from hardware failures to total site outages.

Scale

Performance and capacity scale linearly and data is automatically distributed as new capacity is added.

How AOS Storage works

AOS storage

Features

Performance

Data locality

Data locality provides high performance. When data is written by an application, one copy is stored locally so it can be retrieved without needing to access the network. This ensures the lowest possible latency and prevents the network from becoming congested.

Intelligent tiering

The storage environment continually monitors data access and automatically optimizes data placement on either SSD or HDD tiers, resulting in optimal performance without the need for manual intervention or troubleshooting.

High-throughput

The latest memory class storage technologies, like NVMe, deliver high throughput and fast response times compared to traditional SATA or SAS technology.

Resilience

Granular and efficient snapshots

Metadata-based local snapshots with virtual machine and application-level consistency recover data instantly to meet a wide range of RTO and RPO requirements.

Automatic self-healing

AOS Storage is designed to automatically self-heal in the event of SSD, HDD/NVMe device, or node failures. It can also fully recover the management stack without requiring any user intervention or causing delays.

Tunable redundancy

AOS Storage absorbs incoming writes onto fast, low latency SSD tier. Data is then written to back-end storage resources asynchronously. This process ensures data exists in at least two independent locations in the cluster, making it fault-tolerant.

Scale

Easy scale-out

AOS Storage allows organizations to start with the infrastructure they need today, and effortlessly scale out as application and business needs evolve.

Independently scale

Independently scale storage or compute resources helps fine tune requirements for applications with different needs and hypervisors.

Fast provisioning

Storage policies are easily created and attached to VMs allowing instantaneous access to dynamic storage pools as capacity is added.

How it works

AOS Storage simplifies storage for virtual and container environments by pooling the storage devices that are directly attached to a cluster of servers and presenting them to applications across a variety of storage protocols. Data is managed and protected by a fine-grained, distributed metadata system. It ensures that data is stored and accessed efficiently, while also providing robust protection against data loss or corruption.

Nutanix AOS FAQ

Nutanix AOS (Acropolis Operating System) is the core software foundation of the entire Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure. Its primary job is to create a hyperconverged platform by pooling the compute and local storage (SSDs, HDDs) from all the individual servers (nodes) in a cluster into a single, unified resource pool.

The key difference is their role:

  • AOS is the underlying operating system that manages all the storage and data services. It is the intelligence that creates the resilient, scalable infrastructure.

  • AHV is the optional, integrated hypervisor that runs on top of AOS to create and manage virtual machines.

You can run different hypervisors on top of AOS (like VMware ESXi or Microsoft Hyper-V), but AOS is always the essential software layer providing the core Nutanix functionality.

The Distributed Storage Fabric (DSF) is the heart of Nutanix AOS. It is the proprietary, software-defined storage technology that aggregates the local storage drives from every node in the cluster and presents it as a single, high-performance, and resilient storage pool to the hypervisor.

Nutanix AOS is built with data resilience as a core principle, using several mechanisms to protect data without relying on traditional RAID.

  • Replication Factor (RF): Data is written in multiple copies across different nodes in the cluster. With a standard Replication Factor of 2 (RF2), every piece of data exists on at least two different nodes. If an entire node or disk fails, the data is still immediately available from its replica.

  • Self-Healing: If a disk or node fails, AOS automatically detects the failure and begins to re-replicate the missing data copies to other healthy nodes in the cluster to restore the full replication factor. This process happens in the background without administrative intervention.

  • Data Integrity Checks: AOS performs checksums on data as it is written and read to protect against silent data corruption and ensure data integrity.

Nutanix AOS includes a suite of enterprise-grade storage optimization features designed to reduce the data footprint and improve performance, which are typically licensed and enabled by default in most tiers. Key features include:

  • Compression: AOS can use various compression techniques on data to save space, and it intelligently applies them post-process so as not to impact initial write performance.

  • Deduplication: The platform can deduplicate data both inline (as it is written) and post-process, identifying and eliminating redundant copies of data blocks to save significant capacity.

  • Erasure Coding (EC-X): Similar to RAID 5/6 but implemented in software, Erasure Coding provides a more space-efficient way of protecting data than just replication. For example, instead of storing three full copies of data (RF3), EC-X can use parity calculations to protect against failures while using much less raw storage capacity.

Nutanix AOS upgrades are designed to be simple, automated, and non-disruptive, using a feature called One-Click Upgrade. The entire process is managed from the Nutanix Prism web console.
