San Mateo County Transforms Datacenter and Virtualizes Desktops with Nutanix and Unidesk Solutions

Simplicity, fast deployment, flexible configurations and scale-out architecture pave the way for County to achieve lower cost and greater IT efficiency

SAN JOSE, CALIF. AND MARLBOROUGH, MASS. – April 10, 2014 – Nutanix, the leading provider of advanced datacenter infrastructure solutions, and Unidesk, the leading provider of desktop management software for making Windows® a cloud utility, today announced that San Mateo County, in California, is leveraging their solutions to virtualize its 6,000 desktop computers as part of an internal Desktop as a Service (DaaS) initiative. San Mateo County is deploying the Nutanix® Virtual Computing Platform and the Unidesk® virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) management solution to streamline IT operations, enhance end user mobility and improve application access.

San Mateo County has already transitioned 235 PCs to persistent virtual desktops at its Fair Oaks Health Clinic, with another 1,300 desktops planned. The desktops along with 25 production server workloads are hosted on the Nutanix Virtual Computing Platform that converges compute and storage resources into a single appliance. The Nutanix platform enables a “pay as you grow” architecture and strategy, keeping project costs low and infrastructure growth simple. The desktops are created and configured with over 70 different applications using Unidesk VDI management software. Unidesk’s patented desktop layering technology eliminates the complex set of point tools needed to manage virtual desktops by integrating desktop provisioning, application virtualization, image management, persistent personalization and storage optimization into one easy-to-use platform.

“To fulfill our mission of simplifying our datacenter and reducing costs, we felt Nutanix and Unidesk were, without question, the right vendors to partner with,” said Jon Walton, chief information officer at San Mateo County. “By leveraging the power of Nutanix, Unidesk and VMware Horizon View™, San Mateo County is creating a world-class virtual computing model where there is little complexity. With Nutanix, infrastructure is simple to scale and becomes self-managing, while Unidesk enables us to manage even highly personalized desktops at lower cost. Now that we’re seeing the cost benefits and management efficiencies we expected from desktop virtualization, we look forward to virtualizing more of our 6,000 desktops county-wide.”

Nutanix continues to transform VDI and deliver the benefits of web-scale IT capabilities to virtualized datacenters while delivering unmatched simplicity and enterprise-class functionality. The platform is fast to install (deploys in about 45 minutes), easy to manage and out performs legacy infrastructure. Unidesk’s desktop layering technology enables even complex applications such as the county’s eClinicalWorks electronic health records (EHR) software to be quickly virtualized in less than 30 minutes with little expertise, compared to the hours or days required by traditional technologies.

“We’re really a DaaS provider and our information systems department is a net zero cost entity,” said Gordon Helms, Deputy Director of Operations, San Mateo County. “We charge a subscription fee per virtual desktop and now, with Unidesk management on Nutanix systems, we can charge a lower price than we could have for physical PCs. We did a deep ROI analysis on physical desktops versus VDI using Nutanix, Unidesk and VMware and found when you factor in work efficiencies, economies of scale and power savings, VDI becomes more cost-effective.”

With Nutanix and Unidesk solutions, San Mateo County plans to make remote access available to all of its employees. “Nutanix just made infrastructure a lot simpler and more predictable with its linear performance and scaling, while Unidesk has made creating personal desktops, keeping Windows patched and delivering applications far easier,” stated Mr. Walton. “A natural next step for the County is to support home PC and BYOD. It won’t matter if a road is closed and users can’t get to their PCs, they’ll still be able to access their desktops anywhere, anytime, all for a lower cost than a physical desktop.”
