Prairie North Health Region Improves Patient Care With Nutanix Virtual Computing Platform Solution

Canadian Healthcare Provider Moves Focus to Providing Patient Services Instead of Infrastructure

SAN JOSE, CA & TORONTO, CANADA – July 10, 2014 – Nutanix, the web-scale converged infrastructure company, today announced that Prairie North Health Region (PNHR) has chosen its Virtual Computing Platform to improve the reliability and predictability for its front line medical staff.

PNHR is a large health services provider in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada and has been an innovator in healthcare IT for the Province since 2008 when it first adopted virtual desktops to increase productivity, reduce costs and better support the delivery of clinical systems. That deployment had an immediate impact on travel and logistics to its remote facilities, previously taking up to four hours to reach some sites. With this success, Zero Client virtual desktops are now the standard for all PC replacements and upgrades within the Health Region.

Most recently, PNHR turned to Nutanix to help achieve its operating goals through reduction of complexity and increased reliability. Prior to deploying Nutanix, PNHR had racks of blade servers, over 5 separate iSCSI storage arrays, as well as all-flash arrays providing backend infrastructure. With multiple infrastructure points and separate networks to manage, complexity was making it difficult to expand and stabilize its virtual footprint.

“The Nutanix converged solution not only provided the reliable and robust backend infrastructure we were looking for, it also freed our high-end resources’ time allowing them to focus on new strategic initiatives instead of fighting internal infrastructure fires,” said Trevor Derkatz, CIO of PNHR. Nutanix’s simplified and easy management also means PNHR can add new nodes as demand dictates without days being spent setting up new infrastructure.

PNHR is now running approximately 700 concurrent virtual machines across four Nutanix blocks in two datacenters. Focusing on its clinical desktops, PNHR plans to deliver over 1200 concurrent virtual desktops on Nutanix’s platform during the next year as legacy infrastructure is replaced.

PNHR is also moving server workloads onto Nutanix including its Exchange 2010 deployment in order to reduce its datacenter footprint and save on hypervisor licensing costs associated with the use of storage-heavy focused nodes.

“Nutanix converged solution provided an immense increase in performance on servers being migrated over, allowed for backup windows to shrink, and provided for great ease of management through a true single pane vs. managing multiple environments, a true dashboard for compute, storage, & hypervisor,” said David Stolte, manager of datacenter operations for PNHR.

Nutanix has provided PNHR with the foundational infrastructure solution needed for the delivery and expansion of PNHR’s virtual clinical desktops throughout the region. Offering its clinicians a predictable virtualized desktop environment with reduced latency cutting down the amount of time it takes users to log in.

“The use of Zero Clients, Tap and Go technologies, and now Nutanix, has brought us the highly responsive, reliable, and predictable experience we wanted, and that added value means our clinicians and patients are getting quicker access to their information. The end result is better patient care,” said Trevor Derkatz, CIO of PNHR.

“By using Nutanix’s industry leading converged infrastructure solution, Prairie North Health Region has realized significant time savings and performance increases,” said Anton Granic, Senior Director, Canada, Nutanix. “Our web-scale infrastructure is a fundamentally new approach to designing, deploying and managing datacenters that are radically simple and efficient. This has enabled Prairie North to deliver a better working environment for its employees as well as improve patient care standards.”
