Nutanix Triumphs in Epic vFlipCup Tournament Showdown

Fast-Growing Company “Raises the Cup” for Infrastructure Startups Worldwide with Latest Win

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 16, 2013Nutanix, the leading provider of hyper-efficient, massively scalable and elegantly simple datacenter infrastructure solutions, today announced that the company was named the vFlipcup Champion for 2013 at VMworld, VMware’s annual conference for IT professionals focusing on virtual server environments and the largest virtualization-specific event in the world. The vFlipcup event is widely acknowledged as the most significant VMworld accomplishment achievable; it is the premier corporate Flipcup competition held at any virtualization event worldwide. This is the first consecutive year Nutanix has been recognized as vFlipcup champion, making the company one of the most celebrated at VMworld and throughout the virtualization community. Ever.

“The vFlipcup awards recognize companies that are making the biggest impact in virtualization, and it is an honor to be a 2013 winner,” said Steven “Solo Cup Samurai” Poitras, Solutions Architect and Captain, Nutanix vFlipcup Team. “The Nutanix Virtual Computing Platform has transformed how enterprises design and manage virtual datacenters, but the Nutanix vFlipcup team is where the real magic is happening.”

Surrounded by a deafening crowd of hundreds of shouting onlookers, Poitras led his team to the top of the vFlipcup Champion Podium. The converged team stood out among the more than sixteen companies competing at the alcohol-optional event, recognized especially for their ability to compute (flip) and store (drink) via the same infrastructure (team members). Against nearly insurmountable odds, the team of drinking-game Jedi summoned the courage to face down a competitive field packed with war parties from the likes of Veeam, VMware, Riverbed, Zerto, Actifio, Neverfail and Tintri. In a final showdown with TechValidate amid intense conditions and against fierce competition, the Nutanix team triumphed and won the title.

Industry experts acknowledged the accolade. “This is flipping awesome,” said Flip Cupworthy, former nine-time U.S. National Flipcup champion and Flipcup industry analyst. “The industry has never seen a team of this caliber arise from stealth and completely change the way the game is played. This team will go down in history, and Nutanix is clearly a company to watch in the coming years. They are clearly investing heavily in attracting and developing the brightest and the best from the engineering Flipcup talent pool.”

Poitras and his team owe their success to a rigorous two-year training regimen that would make a 1980s Soviet Olympian cringe.

“This was the moment we had spent our entire careers training for. The Nutanix operations unit drilled us on flipping efficiency and fast turnaround times. The engineering team programmed simulations on how the viscosity and surface tension of beer impacts the rotational velocity and momentum of the cup rim with regard to its adherence to a drenched flat surface,” said Lukas “Flip Fiend” Lundell, senior manager of performance and solutions engineering at Nutanix and cup-flipping team MVP. “But probably most important were the interns who provided us with the most cutting-edge flipcup breakthroughs from the front lines of America’s drinking-game meccas: our four-year universities.”

The highly-coveted vFlipcup awards are determined through a rigorous selection process involving industry luminaries and editors from SearchVirtualFlipCup.com who select the winner based on a number of criteria including dexterity, speed, cup management and, of course, overall Flipcup performance. The judges were impressed with Nutanix’s converged approach, involving two core Nutanix employees and three individuals crowd-sourced in real-time from the vFlipcup community. The converged team stood out among the more than seven companies competing at the alcohol-optional event, recognized especially for their ability to compute (flip) and store (drink) via the same infrastructure (team members). This was the second annual competition and was the largest competition in the event’s history.

As one of the most in-demand Bay-Area startups for engineers on LinkedIn, and the fastest growing enterprise infrastructure company of the past decade, Nutanix’s win further demonstrates the power of a converged infrastructure solution. Only a company capable of creating a paradigm-shifting technology could put together a flip-cup team worthy to hoist the hardware.
