Powering Member‑First Banking with Future‑Ready Infrastructure

Overview

At UK Credit Union, serving members isn’t merely a priority but the driving force that shapes every choice and every action. And for Jason Fisher, AVP of Information Technology, that commitment shapes every technology decision.

“There's a difference between credit unions and banks,” said Fisher. “Credit unions are all about member support, while banks also have to worry about taking care of stockholders and building dividends.”

Serving more than 112,000 members with everything from checking accounts to mortgages, UK Credit Union depends on an always‑on infrastructure. Even a few minutes of downtime can disrupt trust.

“We stake our credibility on assuring members they can always bank with us, and that we're safe and reliant,” said Fisher.

UK Credit Union's network infrastructure is fundamental to delivering services such as checking and savings accounts, mortgages, auto loans, commercial loans, and investment services. That’s why Fisher and his team take business continuity very seriously.

With rising VMware licensing costs threatening to balloon the IT budget, Fisher’s organization saw an opportunity to modernize, cut costs, improve operational reliability, and accelerate its cloud‑forward strategy with Nutanix.

Key Benefits

39% savings in the total cost of operations over native public cloud

17 months’ time saved in VM migrations

$82,000 increased cash flow to business

Choosing Nutanix Cloud Clusters has enabled us to achieve savings of 39% in the total cost of operations in our current environment, compared to moving to a native public cloud environment.

A Future-Ready Platform for Banking

Fisher and his team had relied on a hyperconverged infrastructure for years to support the organization’s key banking services. The Credit Union had been a longtime VMware customer, but escalating licensing fees threatened to squeeze the organization’s budget, according to Fisher.

“We were running a VMware environment, and saw costs potentially doubling the next year, and possibly doubling again the year after that,” he said.

This opened the door for UK Credit Union officials to consider alternative solutions and to steer clear of vendor lock-in.

UK Credit Union was also committed to moving more of its operations to the cloud. Fisher understood the advantages that a cloud-forward and AI-ready infrastructure strategy could provide in business continuity, agility and a more predictable, OPEX-focused model.

“We started looking around and working with our partner, Trace3, and they strongly suggested we consider Nutanix,” Fisher recalled.

Smooth, Rapid VM Migration

After considering a variety of architectures and approaches, Fisher and his team deployed Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) on Azure, with four nodes in production and three disaster recovery nodes. They then used the Nutanix Move workload migration tool to speed-up the process.

“Nutanix Move made it easy to migrate our VMs to the Nutanix Cloud Platform,” Fisher noted. “In fact, we reduced the amount of time needed to migrate to native Azure VM instances by about 17 months, or 94%.”

The initial deployment also required fewer resources than initially estimated. Consequently, Fisher noted that the organization was able to “re-invest approximately $82,000 in savings” into an additional on-premises Nutanix node, with plenty of storage and compute power for future initiatives.

“Nutanix gave us a strong foundation to work from,” Fisher noted. “Without having to think about it, the business just runs smoothly on Nutanix and we’re incredibly happy with the results.”

Building Trust with Business Resilience

The first key use case for the Credit Union was improved disaster recovery. With its cloud-powered NC2 on Azure, the organization has been able to achieve a new level of resilience, reducing the downtime of a catastrophic failure from days to hours.

“If there’s a catastrophic failure, we can rotate everything to our disaster recovery site, and with the exception of a few small things that reside in-house, everything will still be running,” said Fisher.

Achieving Simpler, More Efficient Operations

The Nutanix deployment not only supports a more dependable, always-on experience for Credit Union members, but has unlocked rapid operational savings and streamlined administration.

“Choosing Nutanix Cloud Clusters has enabled us to achieve savings of 39% in the total cost of operations in our current environment, compared to moving to a native public cloud environment,” said Fisher.

Although its member community doesn’t generally experience the direct benefits of the new system, the Credit Union IT team and stakeholders discovered that it is helping them work smarter and more efficiently.

“The curse of good IT means that when we do major changes to our systems, the customers don’t feel it,” said Fisher. “But our back-office staff has seen improved performance for some of our core processing, and it has been noticeable enough that employees have thanked us.”

Working with the solution and its consistent operating model has simplified operations as well. Fisher was able to redirect some full-time employees to focus on cybersecurity and is able to manage the infrastructure with 20% fewer staff.

“With the right tools, we can easily support as many servers as we need to, and it still works out fine, even with a smaller staff,” said Fisher.

Nutanix has enabled us to put an AI-ready infrastructure in place.

A Vision for the Future

The Nutanix Cloud Platform with NC2 on Azure and Nutanix Move have provided UK Credit Union with a scalable foundation that’s ready to take on future initiatives, including AI and stronger security.

“Nutanix has enabled us to put an AI-ready infrastructure in place,” said Fisher. “We have the ability, and a node onsite, and we have provisioned space to be sure our environment is set and ready for it.”

Building on its effort to strengthen resilience and minimize risk, UK Credit Union is also planning to implement micro-segmentation for improved cybersecurity.

“Nutanix will give us the ability to have a server set that is segmented away and only accessed by certain authorized users,” said Fisher. “It’s a key part of our journey toward a zero-trust framework.”

With the flexible, dependable Nutanix infrastructure in place, Fisher and his team are confident that UK Credit Union can continue to deliver an excellent experience to every member while freeing its staff to innovate for years to come.
