Evodian wanted to simplify lifecycle management for its customer-critical Kubernetes platform. With Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP), Evodian streamlined operations, accelerated customer onboarding from days to hours, and built a more scalable, flexible foundation to support continued business growth.
Moving SIS Core to NKP has given us predictable costs and tight control over our data, and better performance. The savings we've unlocked are helping us promote an AI and automation agenda that the business wants to pursue.
Lowered Costs
Reduces monthly Kubernetes costs by roughly 80%
Strong Security
Keeps sensitive data within its own data center
Encourage AI and Automation
Kubernetes savings support the company’s wider innovation goals
Headquartered in New Delhi, SIS Limited is a leading Indian multinational, specializing in security solutions, facility management, and cash logistics. As part of its Vision 2030 strategy, it plans to add 500,000 respectable jobs to its current workforce of 350,000 people. Approximately three years ago, the company completed development of SIS Core, a line-of-business system that manages payroll, invoicing, contracts, and compliance across departments. Built as a modernized application, SIS Core used Kubernetes in the public cloud to manage its microservices containers.
As the number of SIS Core users increased and the volume of application data grew, concerns about the Kubernetes solution arose. The company identified issues with performance, security, visibility, control and cost. Sushil Mishra, assistant general manager of IT for SIS Limited, says, “Our outgoings on running Kubernetes in a public cloud were rising around 20% per year.” To bring the application’s sensitive data back to its own data center, the company sought a hybrid platform that could maximize control.
To address its challenges, SIS Limited migrated Kubernetes from the public cloud to the Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP). Mr. Mishra comments, “We chose NKP because Nutanix gave us a lot of confidence. It offered direct implementation support, helping to design and ensure the solution’s performance.”
Nutanix Professional Services (NPS) led a structured design and planning phase with SIS Limited, including workshops to define workload requirements, before Nutanix Partner Tech9 carried out the implementation. NPS and Tech9 then built a parallel Kubernetes environment on NKP to test its performance against the public cloud, completing testing and validation before migrating any production workloads. Once validation was complete, SIS Limited moved both primary and secondary SIS Core sites to NKP running on Nutanix hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI). Mr. Mishra says, “Everyone from Nutanix was very solution-oriented and delivered the project ownership and assistance as promised.”
Improvements in Performance
With SIS Core on Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI), SIS Limited gained a more capable system. The platform includes storage with modern flash memory, a 25-gigabit network, and a favorable virtual workload-to-processor ratio. “We’re working with the Nutanix team on optimization and translating what we have into greater SIS Core performance,” comments Mr. Mishra.
Strong Security and Control of Key Data
Previously, critical SIS Core files and data resided in the public cloud provider’s blob storage. Now with NKP and NCI, SIS Limited keeps sensitive employee, payroll, and customer-contract data within its own data center on-premises, reducing the risk from hosting it externally. Mr Mishra comments, “With data on Nutanix, our management and IT team have great visibility and confidence in how that data is secured.”
Reduced Kubernetes Operating Costs
By migrating from Kubernetes on the public cloud to NKP, SIS Limited has materially reduced the monthly operational costs (OPEX) for SIS Core. Mr. Mishra says, “We have seen roughly a 80% reduction in our monthly spend compared with what we were paying our cloud provider for Kubernetes.”
He adds, “Even with our capital investment and the licensing costs over the lifetime of the platform, we still expect more than 60% return on investment over five years.”
Freed Budget for AI and Automation
The cost savings SIS Limited has gained from NKP support the company’s wider innovation goals. “The business wants to be an early mover in new technology, but operational costs have a real impact on our development programs,” comments Mr. Mishra. “By lowering OPEX, we can invest more in areas like AI and automation.”
Given its experience with NKP, the company now plans to migrate more business-critical applications to microservices. It aims to consolidate these applications on NKP and Nutanix in order to continue investing in IT innovation.
Mr. Mishra says, “Our vision is to move our applications onto a modernized architecture, and as those become container-ready, we plan to consolidate them onto Nutanix. We have around 5-plus applications in scope, and we expect to invest in further infrastructure on the same platform as that roadmap plays out.”
Headquartered in New Delhi, Tech9labs is a customer-driven and rapidly growing organization that offers an innovative portfolio of IT infrastructure solutions and services. The company aims to unify its customer’s IT infrastructure, protect it and maximize their business’ performance.
