NDTV Profit optimizes newsroom workflows and achieves cloud portability

Indian business and financial news television channel, NDTV Profit, partners Nutanix to ensure news coverage keeps rolling 24/7 across multiple platforms.

Overview

NDTV Profit, a prominent 24-hour business news channel in India, identified an opportunity to enhance organizational agility by migrating from legacy 3-tier physical systems to Nutanix Cloud Platform. With the evolving technological landscapes and the establishment of new facilities, the organization sought to implement advanced technology capable of managing both enterprise and broadcast infrastructure requirements.

As a result, NDTV Profit has achieved several significant outcomes. The organization has achieved cloud portability, enhanced business resiliency and application performance, and realized substantial cost reductions coupled with improved operational efficiency in Information Technology (IT). Furthermore, this transition has established a foundation conducive to accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and the implementation of a hybrid cloud strategy.

Challenge

NDTV is a prominent Indian news media company, known for its in-depth journalism and investigative reporting. It operates multiple news channels, including NDTV 24x7, NDTV India, NDTV-Profit, NDTV-Marathi, NDTV-MPCG & NDTV Rajashtan.

NDTV Profit is a leading 24-hour business news channel in India, focusing on financial news, market updates, corporate developments, and economic trends. Known for its comprehensive analysis and live coverage of the stock markets, NDTV Profit delivers content through broadcast news and various digital platforms. This content caters to a wide range of audiences including investors, traders and business professionals.

The news broadcasting industry is characterized by a high-pressure environment, where news teams compete fiercely to break stories first and maintain audience engagement. This necessitates timely access to information from multiple sources, the ability to manage large amounts of visual and video data in real time, and the facilitation of collaborative editing processes.

NDTV Profit identified that its legacy infrastructure, comprising bare metal servers, was no longer adequate to support its core applications, including its newsroom editing system, production asset management, and archiving system. The existing infrastructure presented challenges in terms of scalability and maintenance complexity. Mr. Harmit Singh Malhotra, Chief Technology Officer at NDTV Profit, expressed the view that there must be a more efficient and effective approach to managing these critical operations.

Solution

Malhotra maintained constant communication with Avid to facilitate the certification of Nutanix’s technology. After many discussions, Nutanix received certification for Avid's technology, prompting Malhotra to initiate a project to migrate from their legacy solution.  Malhotra stated, "I engaged with Avid regarding accreditation for the Nutanix Cloud Platform (NCP) solution at the earliest opportunity, as I recognized Nutanix's potential to revolutionize IT operations for broadcasting entities such as ours."

NDTV Profit has subsequently implemented six Nutanix hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) nodes. Three of these nodes are allocated to broadcast functions, encompassing newsroom operations, post-production processes, and archiving solutions. The remaining three nodes are utilized for critical corporate systems. These systems include software-based EPBX, in-house business applications that process raw stock exchange data for on-screen stock tickers, on-air graphics, and other proprietary applications.

Customer Outcome

Ease of cloud portability driving newsroom operations

"Nutanix provides us with the capability to streamline our hybrid cloud strategy," said Malhotra. The IT department maintains its digital applications on AWS while executing resource-intensive high-resolution image and video editing processes on the Nutanix Cloud Platform.

He continued, "Approximately 95% of our operations are currently performed on Nutanix's on-premise infrastructure before being transferred to the public cloud for content distribution. In fact, the real-time stock data displayed on our website is initially hosted on Nutanix infrastructure and subsequently transmitted to the cloud."

Built for resiliency and performance

"We must maintain flawless operations, as television viewers are acutely aware of any discrepancies," said Malhotra. He further elaborated that, in the event of a node failure, the business applications will continue to function without interruption, thereby ensuring the continuity of broadcast operations.

Regarding the company's performance, Malhotra remarked, "The implementation of Nutanix has unequivocally enhanced our workflow efficiency and revolutionized our operational procedures." He noted that their primary broadcast and corporate application is operating at optimal capacity, facilitating expeditious access to substantial visual files for newsroom personnel, enabling collaborative editing processes, and allowing for the swift preparation of footage for broadcast. Malhotra concluded by stating, "Nutanix has significantly elevated the standard of our digital production capabilities."

Improved operational efficiency, reduced datacenter footprint by 60%

“The Nutanix Cloud Platform solution has really helped us maximize the utilization of our data center. I remember the wastage from our legacy platform, out of the 36-core CPUs that we had, only two to four were being used,” said Malhotra. Today, the IT team has eliminated the issue and replaced 15 standard 2U rack servers with 6 Nutanix nodes of a similar 2U size — reducing the footprint by 60 percent thus dramatically cutting utility bills. Licensing costs have also been reduced as NDTV chose Nutanix AHV over VMware during the evaluation stage.

“Ease of use is the most important thing. The whole team keenly feels this because they can now see everything running on a single Prism dashboard. IT members can login to the dashboard on our laptops from anywhere with VPN and do their maintenance. What used to take a couple of hours now just takes less than 30 minutes,” said Malhotra.

Next Steps

Drives plans for AI adoption across the business

Time saved is even more precious for the broadcaster as AI promises greater efficiencies to media companies. Popular use cases for AI in broadcasting include video analysis and indexing, content moderation, and viewer analytics. Malhotra is looking to experiment and sees how it could help researchers summarize extensive reports and accurately transcribe audio in minutes. “It’s early days, but Nutanix gives us that capability to explore AI and uncover where it can deliver the most value,” he comments.
