MSIG Asia built its hybrid-cloud strategy around Nutanix, optimizing costs and simplifying routine management tasks, freeing up staff to focus on innovation.
To drive innovation and streamline operations, MSIG Asia, part of the Global 500 MS&AD Insurance Group, modernized its IT infrastructure by adopting the Nutanix Cloud Platform solution and replacing VMware with the Nutanix AHV hypervisor. This transformation avoided significant costs, accelerated digital initiatives and freed up resources for other development work. It also strengthened MSIG Asia’s technology leadership in the region, with VP Yew Wei Kee, championing the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation.

Accelerated digital transformation to help serve the business better
Avoided substantial costs
Avoided a four-fold increase in renewal pricing of VMware’s hypervisor by moving to AHV
Increased IT efficiency
Simplified routine infrastructure management, allowing staff to focus on higher-value work
One of the key factors for working with Nutanix is the company’s evolving ecosystem of solutions that help us adopt newer technologies like microservices in a simplified and compliant way.
Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group (MSIG) Asia is part of the MS&AD Insurance Group, a Global 500 company and one of the world’s largest non-life insurance organizations. MSIG Asia has a presence in over 50 markets across the ASEAN region, with locations in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, China, Korea, India, Taiwan, and other countries. Its headquarters are in Singapore.
As part of its modernization strategy, MSIG Asia sought to enhance the scalability and agility of its core infrastructure to drive innovation. It wanted to replace its three-tier legacy solution with a hybrid-cloud infrastructure that would enable the company to maintain control over its data, thereby reducing any potential regulatory and compliance burdens. Yew Wei Kee, vice president of technology solutions at MSIG Asia, says, “We didn’t just want to adopt technology but use it to simplify business processes and create space for innovation.”
The company began replacing its legacy solution with Nutanix hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), running VMware and Nutanix AHV hypervisors on top of the nodes. However, with VMware licensing costs set to increase following the Broadcom acquisition, MSIG Asia decided to standardize on AHV—a process that required minimal changes. Kee says, “It wasn’t just the cost of VMware licensing; we wanted to work with a provider like Nutanix whose approach is customer-centric to build a long-term relationship. Nutanix’s Professional Services team is a great example of this. They provided timely and proactive guidance on best practices, helping us achieve all our business goals. We are glad to have found a partner in Nutanix who’s invested in our success.”
By April 2025, MSIG Asia had transitioned approximately 2,000 virtual machines from VMware to AHV with Nutanix Prism as the unified management console to monitor and manage multiple environments. “Having Prism as a single pane of glass gives my team a lot of support,” comments Kee, “They can manage all our environments through a single interface without having to jump around.”
Greater IT agility driving innovation
With Nutanix, MSIG Asia can accelerate the development of new services and apps, launching workloads rapidly across on-premises and public cloud infrastructures. Kee says, "It is easy for us to scale up using Nutanix, enabling us to serve the business better." Moreover, as Nutanix's service portfolio expands, MSIG Asia can continue to drive innovation. “Nutanix is helping our business to accelerate digital transformation and look for opportunities to streamline processes and drive innovation,” added Kee.
Frees up resources for the AI roadmap
“We made the switch to AHV after facing a fourfold increase in renewal costs with Broadcom’s VMware. AHV is free and offers comparable features, so it was a straightforward decision to avoid future cost hikes,” said Kee. Furthermore, the switch over from three-tier to HCI reduced MSIG Asia’s datacenter footprint, lowering hardware and power consumption costs. “We removed hardware from our secondary site, helping IT get aligned better with our sustainability strategy,” said Kee. As a result of the overall improvements, the company freed up resources to invest in its modernization strategy and artificial intelligence (AI) roadmap, which includes streamlining claims processing.
Increases IT operational efficiency
MSIG Asia also optimized the amount of IT resources needed for routine infrastructure management. “Nutanix’s single-pane-of-glass management has improved our overall IT productivity, freeing up valuable resources to focus on other development projects,” said Kee. “Staff can complete disaster recovery testing and other processes with a single click via the Prism interface.”
Becoming a Nutanix evangelist
Following the success of the hybrid-cloud strategy, Yew Wei Kee has become an advocate for hyperconverged infrastructure and Nutanix. “I receive a lot of calls from my peers asking what we are using. I tell them that our migration to Nutanix was not a problem, and I advise them to perform their cost-saving calculations. However, the biggest factor is not the cost– it’s the seamless integration and Nutanix being customer-centric.”
MSIG Asia has completed tests of the Nutanix Cloud Clusters solution, which allows customers to run apps and data in the public cloud. “We tested Nutanix Cloud Clusters last year and everything went well, so it’s now in our pipeline,” says Yew Wei Kee. Likewise, MSIG Asia has added the Nutanix Kubernetes Platform solution to its list for deploying and managing Kubernetes® clusters across on-premises and public cloud environments.
