Golding Contractors builds its future on

Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2)

With concerns over the suitability of VMware Cloud on AWS for the business, Golding Contractors migrated to NC2 with AWS for highly flexible and cost-effective IT performance.

Overview

Golding Contractors migrated from VMware Cloud on AWS to Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) due to concerns about long-term platform supportability.  Following a successful proof of concept with the support of Nutanix Professional Services, the company migrated workloads within a 24-hour window. Besides restoring operational confidence and maximizing cloud flexibility and efficiency, the company implemented a cost-effective zero-compute DR solution that met and exceeded their RTO and RPO targets.

Key Benefits

Maximum cloud flexibility and efficiency

Spins up resources across NC2 or AWS instances fast while leveraging AWS native cloud resources, applying existing compute saving plans

Simplifying operations while lowering DR expense

Zero-compute MST solution in NC2 puts DR nodes in hibernation to be launched instantly when required

After considering several options including moving directly to the public cloud and bringing back on-premises infrastructure we realized that NC2 ticked all the boxes for us.

Golding Contractors is a leading provider of civil infrastructure, urban and mining services on the East Coast of Australia. Golding is part of the broader NRW Holdings Group which employs a workforce of more than 11,500 with revenues of AU$3.3 billion in 2025.

With Golding Contractors expanding and IT end-user numbers increasing by 400 percent, the flexibility and performance of its IT systems on VMware Cloud (VMC) on AWS became even more critical. However, the changing relationship between VMware and AWS raised concerns among Golding Contractors’ stakeholders. Dom Johnston, IT manager at Golding Contractors, says, “We started questioning the suitability of the platform beyond our existing three-year contract.” Due to performance concerns, the IT team increased the frequency of disaster recovery (DR) tests from quarterly to monthly.

Solution

Golding Contractors sought an enterprise-grade solution that addressed its challenges and mitigated risk for its business-critical IT platform. The company considered multiple options, including going all-in on the public cloud before deciding on Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) on AWS, which provided a hybrid cloud platform that allowed the business to run applications across on-premises, AWS, and edge environments.

From this point, Golding Contractors worked closely with Nutanix Professional Services and Nutanix’s partner Versent to test the solution. “After we validated our choice during a proof of concept, we decided to move forward with NC2 on AWS since it also met our requirement of having a single platform for production and DR.”

Golding Contractors scheduled a big-bang migration over to NC2 on AWS in February 2025, with a 36-hour possible outage window. “We were able to hand back migrated workloads successfully within about 24 hours,” says Johnston. “The workloads themselves were up and running in the target environment within about 3–4 hours.”

Customer Outcome

Maximizing cloud flexibility and cost efficiency

With NC2, Golding Contractors can manage workloads flexibly. In a fast-moving business where IT requirements change rapidly, the company can spin up new workloads or spin down existing ones to run across NC2 or AWS instances whenever needed. Adds Johnston, “One of the benefits for us in moving to NC2 is that we can start leveraging AWS native cloud resources, and we apply existing compute plan savings over those workloads. Plus, it gives us the flexibility to respond to any changes that come up in the future.”

Simplifying cloud operations and lowering DR expense

Golding Contractors reduced DR costs while improving performance. The business transitioned to Nutanix’s zero-compute Multicloud Snapshot Technology (MST) solution in NC2, eliminating the need for perpetual compute nodes. “It allows us to run our DR hibernated and then spin it up as required. It also means we can test the DR environment every quarter or whenever we need to. With Nutanix, we were also able to meet and exceed the RPO (recovery point objective) and RTO (recovery time objective) targets that we'd set for ourselves.”
