Evodian Speeds Customer Onboarding and Service Delivery with Nutanix Kubernetes Platform

With Nutanix, Evodian delivers IT at scale for constructors who want to concentrate on driving growth rather than the technology underneath their operations.

Overview

Evodian wanted to simplify lifecycle management for its customer-critical Kubernetes platform. With Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP), Evodian streamlined operations, accelerated customer onboarding from days to hours, and built a more scalable, flexible foundation to support continued business growth.

Key Benefits

Higher efficiency

Small team supports a growing Kubernetes footprint

Greater business velocity

Cuts customer onboarding time from days to hours

Simplified growth

Expands IT team more easily by reducing the need for dedicated Kubernetes expertise, enabling staff to perform faster

Before Nutanix, I was our Kubernetes expert focused on keeping things going. Now the whole team is up to speed and we’re more focused on creating bigger and better services for customers.

Challenge

Based in Australia, Evodian is a data services and managed service provider for a variety of businesses. The company aims to provide IT like a utility service, as simple as flicking on a light switch. Obfuscating complexity from customers, enabling them to stay focused on their businesses without needing to stress about the intricacies of the technology underneath. As workloads for customers increased, Evodian recognized that keeping that promise required a more scalable approach and adopted a Kubernetes-run containerized infrastructure.

After first running Kubernetes itself, the company looked for a solution that automated lifecycle management. Evodian practice manager Bailey Dunn successfully implemented and ran the entire platform from day one; however, having all that knowledge tied up in a single person was a risk and inhibited business expansion. In addition, managing Kubernetes manually across a growing number of applications, was consuming too much engineering time. Says Dunn, “We needed a Kubernetes management solution that freed us up to concentrate on building customer data pipelines, instead of mundane operational tasks.”

Solution

After assessing the market, Evodian chose Nutanix’s NKP to help reduce operational workloads. Compared with VMware Tanzu software and Red Hat OpenShift platform, NKP offered portability to any cloud or other provider if needs changed. Adds Dunn, “We were already Nutanix customers and had a high level of trust in its support teams. If we had any challenges, the help would be there.”

The impact of NKP went far beyond platform administration. Aligning closely with Evodian’s business strategy, NKP allowed the company to shift from running multiple customers on a shared cluster to a more flexible multi-cluster management and multi-tenancy model. “Here was our opportunity to prevent the ‘noisy neighbor’ problem where a single tenant consumes a disproportionate amount of a shared cluster,” says Dunn.

Dunn comments, “Service providers are going to have to deal with AI for customers at some point. For us, the NVIDIA GPU Operator support in NKP Pro will be critical in enabling us to fulfill the needs of those customers.”

Customer Outcome

Halved management resource needs
With Nutanix for Kubernetes lifecycle management, Evodian runs its clusters more efficiently. Dunn says, “We have a team of three overseeing customers’ Kubernetes stacks right now, none of whom are solely focused on this task. We thought this was normal for a time, however at recent events we heard of companies having teams of five, six or even more administering similar-sized infrastructures.”

Accelerated customer onboarding from days to hours

Using NKP, Evodian can spin up a full data environment for a new customer significantly faster. “Depending on the complexity of the required stack, it takes us less than a day for deployment; compared to potentially several days for more demanding workloads,” comments Dunn. The rapidity helps customers extract value from their data more quickly while helping Evodian support a faster commercial rhythm to expand the business.

Driving growth with scalable and repeatable model

Evodian aims to provide a true “one-click” IT experience for their end-customers, supporting today’s workloads while futureproofing for AI with a scalable Kubernetes platform. They believe that customers should stay focused on their business while Evodian provides the performance, reliability and availability with Nutanix’s solutions.

Reduced costs and complexity of Kubernetes management

With simplified lifecycle management, Evodian can more effectively accelerate how quickly its staff become competent with the infrastructure, making it easier and more cost-efficient to expand its IT team. The company avoids having to track down and compete for a relatively small group of IT professionals with years of Kubernetes experience and can hire IT personnel with a broader range of skills. Plus, it can invest savings into expanding the customer base. “With NKP, I can teach somebody everything they need to know to be competent with Kubernetes in a month” says Dunn.

Puts greater engineering effort on strategic tasks

Using the savings from easier management, the company can direct IT personnel toward building new integrations and customer services. Dunn comments, “By freeing up technical resources with NKP, we can focus on building our data stack—either creating new products or enhancing existing ones.”

Next Steps

Evodian plans to extend its use of Nutanix Flow network security solution as part of its security architecture for customer virtual private networks (VPC). The goal is to develop a solution that sits between clusters and the NKP management plane. “We want to extend our platform security with Nutanix to include per-customer network isolation at the Kubernetes layer so neither manageability nor security are impacted,” concludes Dunn.
