The Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) is a modern healthcare institution on Curaçao built entirely in accordance with Dutch standards, with adaptations for the Caribbean context. The CMC offers 300 beds and modern facilities, and specialises in top-level clinical, high-quality, and accessible healthcare for the local community. After a few years, the CMC faced the challenge of replacing its IT infrastructure.
Elmer Kwidama, IT manager at CMC, explains: "Our hardware and the VMware-based solution were due for replacement. We were looking for a powerful, reliable solution that was both scalable and easy to manage. Price was an important factor as well." With a network of approximately 3,500 devices and a team consisting of multiple clusters—from functional management to Business Intelligence—there was a need for a modern, scalable, and cost-conscious solution to support the medical services as efficiently as possible.
CMC chose Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure as the foundation of its IT infrastructure. With Nutanix Cloud Manager, the hospital acquired a central and well-organised environment for managing all systems. Thanks to Nutanix Unified Storage, all storage is managed efficiently, without the complexity of multiple separate storage solutions. This ensures secure backups and operational continuity for CMC. "Nutanix's simplicity helped us integrate quickly, without complicated setup and without downtime, which is essential in a hospital environment," says Neomar Scholtz, System Administrator at CMC.

Thanks to the simple integration and lifecycle management, the IT team can now perform maintenance more quickly and easily. The "single pane of glass" management makes daily tasks more intuitive and saves time, allowing IT staff to focus more on innovation rather than maintenance. Additionally, this efficiency leads to significant cost savings. Reducing the complexity of IT tasks and consolidating Nutanix Unified Storage contribute to lower operational costs. Kwidama: "We now have a single management interface that consolidates all systems into one, saving us a lot of time and allowing us to respond to IT needs faster." Not only does this ensure flexibility, but it also optimises IT budget allocation; which is of great importance in a hospital environment with limited resources.
The transition to Nutanix went flawlessly, without any network downtime. With the new platform, CMC can adapt and respond more quickly and effectively to emergencies. "The system is fully self-healing, and we have experienced no downtime, even when performing updates," says Kwidama.
The CMC is now looking ahead to the next five years and considering a gradual transition to cloud solutions. While they are cautiously examining which applications are suitable for the cloud, they will continue to use and optimise their on-premises infrastructure for the time being. At the same time, they are keeping a close eye on costs, as budget management is crucial to maintaining their digitised processes without compromising health care quality. Kwidama concludes: "Although the cloud is certainly an option for the future, we will continue working with Nutanix on-premises for now, because we have the stability and control we need here." With this foundation, CMC can further strengthen its role as a leading healthcare institution in the Caribbean.
