With Nutanix at the heart of its hybrid cloud strategy, AXS has transformed the speed of development, driving growth both domestically and regionally.
A leading payment solution provider in Singapore, AXS wanted to accelerate innovation to remain competitive and drive growth in a rapidly evolving market. By creating a hybrid infrastructure based on Nutanix and connected to the public cloud, AXS has achieved faster app development, reduced infrastructure costs by 30 percent, and maintained compliance without replacing its legacy services. Moreover, the company is driving growth in both local and regional markets with agility and control.
Boosts agility
Provides freedom to deploy apps and data into the cloud at less risk
Increases time to market
Accelerates app development with new infrastructure available in minutes
Lowers costs
Reduces infrastructure costs by 30 percent
With Nutanix, we innovate rapidly while maintaining control and meeting compliance requirements. The hybrid infrastructure delivers the same agility as the cloud, allowing us to scale at our own pace—more cost-effectively and with reduced risk.
AXS is a leading multi-channel payment solutions provider used by one in four Singaporeans. Since its launch in 2000, the company has processed over 700+ million bills, with a combined value exceeding $300+ billion. Every month, more than one million residents use the company’s 800-plus payment services through kiosks, a mobile app, and a web portal.
AXS faces increasing competition from local entrants releasing highly convenient and seamless digital payment solutions. To maintain its position and drive growth both at home and abroad, AXS sought to transform the flexibility of the on-premises infrastructure supporting its services. The company needed a hybrid solution that delivered the scalability of the cloud while helping to avoid compliance and cost issues. Tze Yong Koh (TY), lead solutions architect at AXS, says, “We wanted the agility to deploy apps and data into the cloud without abandoning our existing investments.”
To create an agile hybrid infrastructure for faster deployments while protecting legacy technology, AXS chose Nutanix. Comments TY, “With Nutanix, we could take a phased, low-risk approach to modernizing our technology. It allowed us to retain our secure, on-premises platform for the time being and bridge to highly elastic cloud components.”
AXS deployed the Nutanix Cloud Platform on six hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) nodes, featuring AOS Storage and AHV hypervisor, across two datacenters.
Says TY, “We selected AHV because of the potential cost savings, simplified management, and overall scalability.” As part of a POC, the AXS team built its critical payment gateway and settlement systems to run as microservices in Nutanix, using Yugabyte PostgreSQL databases. Once complete, it powers AXS Drive in a hybrid setup with the AWS cloud-native infrastructure. “The POC validated the hybrid setup, meeting our performance and reliability expectations.”
Drives innovation without disruption
With Nutanix, AXS can move fast and stay competitive in a rapidly evolving digital payments space. The business can accelerate deployment innovation without forgoing its legacy investments or incurring compliance issues. TY says, “Nutanix stack allows us to accelerate the development of apps that offer customers multiple, highly convenient payment options.”
Additionally, by replacing legacy bare-metal servers with Nutanix’s hyperconverged infrastructure, AXS has the freedom to deploy its apps and data into any public cloud—avoiding being tied down to a single provider. “Nutanix means we can effectively manage and utilise our on-premise resources for a changing digital landscape without disruption,” says TY.
Achieves faster time to market for new apps
Development speed has accelerated significantly with Nutanix as part of AXS’s hybrid cloud strategy. The company released the AXS Drive app in just 24 weeks by leveraging the combined agility of Nutanix and AWS. It avoided long lead times for on-premises hardware, provisioning storage, networking, and virtual computing in minutes. Furthermore, with critical data remaining on-premises, no time was lost, ensuring regulatory compliance, and the interoperability between Nutanix and AWS made integration quick and easy. “Leveraging on Nutanix is as easy as leveraging on AWS in terms of the development cycle,” says TY. “Teams can work across both with the same level of agility.”
Reduces infrastructure costs by 30 percent
By transitioning from a three-tier legacy infrastructure to Nutanix’s hybrid cloud strategy, AXS has reduced its infrastructure costs by 30 percent. The business has also reduced its datacenter footprint by 15 percent, aligning IT with the business's environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals. “With Nutanix, we can achieve greater efficiency, maximizing the use of the IT we have and scaling gradually as our needs change,” TY states.
Optimizes the modernization process
Utilizing Nutanix in its hybrid cloud strategy, AXS can modernize its IT and accelerate development in line with changing demands and current financial service regulations. The company can retain complete control over its data, avoid disruptions to critical services, and use existing infrastructure when required. “Nutanix allows us to retain control while modernizing in a fast-paced, evolving payments market in Singapore and beyond,” TY says.
In line with its hybrid-cloud strategy, AXS plans to scale its Nutanix infrastructure to support continued service development for its Singapore market and abroad. Plans include enabling Singaporeans to pay bills originating in other countries. “We have a dual focus of driving growth at home and across the region using our hybrid cloud investments,” TY concludes.
