Service Providers: Hedge against an Uncertain Future

Build profitable and differentiated services while reducing risk

By Nutanix Elevate Service Provider Team

The changes and ongoing uncertainty surrounding the market’s legacy virtualization vendor and their partnership programs has left a lot of their partners scrambling. Service providers are concerned about their future because of the ongoing program changes.

The industry trade press has reported on the impact of a direct-first approach and, more specifically, the disruption in the service provider space, in detail. For example, you can read more about it here and here. It is no wonder service providers are feeling disenfranchised. It has been, and continues to be, a confusing and painful time since the legacy virtualization vendor’s acquisition closed. Unfortunately, these past events create uncertainty about changes that might come, around pricing, investments in innovation, terms in partner programs, and the potential for changes in support policies.

Committed to Service Provider’s Future

Nutanix wants service providers to know that Nutanix is dedicated to helping them move forward in their business journey. Many, many service providers have reached out to Nutanix over the past year in search of a path forward. A common inquiry from service providers who don’t have the flexibility to walk away from their well-established managed and hosted services for virtual machines and more but must seek other options.

Nutanix takes a structured approach to helping service providers evaluate their options. It starts with an introductory workshop where service providers walk through their existing environments and services, learn about the Nutanix Elevate Service Provider Program (NESPP) and the Nutanix Cloud Platform technology stack.

Next, in a technical workshop, Nutanix covers the applicability of products and technologies for a service provider’s specific services, including substitute functionality and migration to the Nutanix stack. Our team will also discuss in detail the Nutanix Elevate Service Provider Program, our unique Service Provider consumption models, the flexibility of the Nutanix portfolio, including our products for Data Platform, Cloud Native, and Enterprise AI workloads. Nutanix will also cover service provider-specific areas such as multitenancy and software-defined networking.

In these workshops, Nutanix service provider architects will demonstrate Nutanix Cloud Platform functionality that enables multitenancy, including projects, quotas, application blueprints, and tenant marketplace. Nutanix experts also will walk through the virtual private clouds (VPCs) and network security capabilities enabled by the Nutanix Flow Network Security solution and the Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure platform. As these conversations progress, Nutanix service provider architects and technical experts can go into more detail on opportunities for infrastructure transformation and migration, especially if the service provider is considering to transition an existing setup over time.

Making Migration Straight Forward

We understand that service providers have significant investment and experience in training, operations and integration, such as automation and monitoring. Nutanix will spend the time to understand a service provider’s current setup, including their services, engineering investments, tooling, and people. That way we can, with our service provider partner, plan how best to move their services and existing customers to Nutanix.

As an example, the  Nutanix service provider team has recently worked with a large service provider to incorporate Nutanix into its new private cloud service as a starting point, minimizing the short-term disruption while allowing the team  to build expertise on Nutanix. The service provider is also leveraging Nutanix professional services to integrate with  its existing monitoring and automation framework.

In another situation, a Nutanix Elevate service provider partner delivering Software-as-a-Service to their customer planned their migration to Nutanix—utilizing the Nutanix Move tool as they swapped their old hardware for Nutanix hyperconverged infrastructure in phases. This change was straightforward, keeping the service provider’s focus on the software delivery with limited impact on their customers.

Nutanix has expanded its list of supported hardware platforms (my.nutanix.com login may be required) over the past few months, allowing more service providers to potentially leverage their existing hardware setup. Nutanix has also announced support for external network storage like Dell PowerFlex and Pure Storage. This expands choices for Service Providers, including potentially leveraging their existing storage investments.
