The application landscape is moving faster than ever, and database administrators (DBAs) and platform engineering teams face a continuous balancing act: how do you deliver the agility and speed developers need to ship applications without compromising on enterprise high availability (HA), data protection, and security compliance?
For teams running MySQL in production, keeping pace with these demands often means managing a complex web of custom scripts and manual processes. Whether it's configuring replication topologies, managing point-in-time recovery log streams, or rotating encryption keys, the administrative overhead is a constant tax on team productivity.
In this post, we introduce Nutanix Database Service (NDB)—a platform built to simplify database lifecycle management, streamline operations and achieve significant productivity gains. Built by Nutanix, an Oracle Partner with roots in pioneering infrastructure simplification and a leader in hybrid on-prem and multi-cloud platforms that enable enterprises to seamlessly run and scale their most critical workloads, including their databases, containers and AI workloads, anywhere.
At its core, Nutanix Database Service (NDB)—not to be confused with MySQL’s Network Database storage engine—is a Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) platform that offers a unified control plane (CP) to provision, clone, backup, provide point in time recovery, patch, and scale your database workloads.
Whether you prefer a visual dashboard, command-line efficiency, or infrastructure-as-code automation, NDB provides a unified experience across a clean User Interface (UI), a powerful Command Line Interface (CLI), and a comprehensive set of REST APIs.
NDB manages your databases for various leading database engines, including Oracle and MySQL, among others.
These databases can run on-premises as well as on hybrid cloud environments (with support for AWS, Azure and GCP) – you can even run the same database on a cluster spanning across on-premises and cloud boundaries.
NDB does not replace or modify your database engine. Instead, it sits outside the database transaction path as an administrative control plane, orchestrating infrastructure and automating operations so you can run the standard MySQL Community and Enterprise Edition engines you already trust – utilizing your existing licenses under a Bring Your Own License (BYOL) model.
To understand how NDB delivers database operations so efficiently, requires examining the underlying Nutanix Cloud Platform storage architecture. Because NDB is built on a highly resilient, distributed hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) fabric, it inherits enterprise-grade storage capabilities directly at the block layer:
Data Locality for Performance: Running MySQL on Nutanix hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) keeps data local. This architecture is designed to deliver maximum performance and consistent I/O for heavy database workloads
Redirect-on-Write (RoW) Snapshots: Instead of traditional backup methods, NDB coordinates snapshot operations directly at the storage layer. These operations are designed to rapidly capture the database state, regardless of database size.
Metadata-Based Zero-Byte Cloning: When you clone a database, NDB doesn't copy physical data blocks. Instead, it rapidly provisions a new, isolated virtual machine that reads from the parent snapshot's block metadata pointers. This enables users to spin up independent, read-write database copies rapidly, with the clones only consuming storage space as new writes and modifications occur.
By shifting database administration from manual maintenance to automated workflows, NDB is designed to simplify production-grade MySQL management across four core functional areas:
1. Rapid Single Instance & High Availability Provisioning
Setting up a production-ready, highly available MySQL deployment traditionally requires significant manual effort to configure replica nodes, establish Group Replication metadata, and ensure proper cluster member consensus.
NDB automates this entire setup. With NDB, you can quickly deploy either standard Single Instance (SI) databases or production-ready MySQL InnoDB Clusters with Group Replication - whether provisioned on-premises or in public clouds including AWS, Azure, and GCP. The platform handles the underlying virtual machine, operating system, and database clustering configuration under the hood, designed to help align every deployment with your enterprise’s standardized software profiles.
2. Continuous Data Protection and Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR)
Historically, MySQL DBAs have relied on traditional database backup utilities paired with complex custom scripts to manage backups and chain binary transaction logs manually—a process that results in slow, size-dependent recovery times.
Leveraging the storage-level snapshots described above, NDB’s point-in-time recovery engine automates transaction log archiving. If a logical failure occurs, you don't have to manually calculate log positions or chain backup files together. You simply select the exact target timestamp in the NDB console, and the platform is designed to rapidly restore the snapshot, play the transactional logs forward, and recover your database to that precise second, regardless of database size.
3. Instant, Space-Efficient Database Cloning
When application developers or QA teams need real production data to test a bug or run a query, copying multi-terabyte databases can paralyze storage networks and take hours.
NDB enables you to spin up zero-byte, space-efficient database clones of your production MySQL datasets rapidly. Because NDB leverages underlying storage pointer redirection, these clones consume virtually no additional space upon creation, allowing you to quickly provision, refresh, or tear down testing environments without impacting production workloads. This is currently supported for Single Instance (SI) databases, with support for HA databases expected in the upcoming NDB 2.12 release.
4. Automated Encryption Key Orchestration (TDE)
Securing data-at-rest is essential for modern regulatory compliance. While MySQL provides native Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) capabilities, managing the key lifecycle across dozens of databases can easily overwhelm administrative teams.
NDB orchestrates these security operations by automating integration with external Key Management Systems (KMS). For MySQL environments, NDB manages key registration and coordinates manual key rotation for both InnoDB master keys and replication log keys across your nodes, helping to maintain your data’s security without manual administrative overhead.
5. Hybrid Cloud Database Portability
As modern applications span diverse infrastructure environments, maintaining operational consistency for database fleets is increasingly difficult. NDB provides a unified management framework to address this complexity:
Multi-Cloud Deployment Flexibility: NDB supports provisioning and managing MySQL databases across on-premises datacenters, co-location facilities, and public clouds—including AWS, Azure, and GCP—via Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2).
Unified Operational Control: You can use a single API, CLI, or management console to manage NDB and your databases across different environments, streamlining hybrid cloud operations.
No Vendor Lock-In: NDB deploys standard MySQL Community or Enterprise Edition binaries rather than proprietary database engines. This allows you to port and run your database workloads wherever your business dictates without being locked into a specific cloud provider's managed service dependencies.
Setting up production-grade MySQL shouldn't require maintaining a mountain of custom automation scripts. Built to standardize provisioning, simplify recovery, and automate encryption keys, NDB lets you focus on building features rather than managing infrastructure.
Stay tuned for our upcoming deep-dive post, where we will examine exactly how NDB coordinates with the native MySQL Shell to orchestrate high availability behind the scenes!
