As a part of our Life at Nutanix blog series, we profile some of our employees around the world to help you get a sense for our unique team and culture. In this blog post, we talk with Yuto Toguchi from our Support team based in Tokyo, Japan. Yuto talks with us about his role as a Senior Systems Reliability Engineer and how Nutanix strives to provide an excellent support experience for all our customers.

Here’s our conversation with Yuto.

Tell me what a Systems Reliability Engineer (SRE) does.

Our Systems Reliability Engineers answer customer queries and troubleshoot technical issues. We work closely with our team of developers and engineers to analyse the root cause of the issue and provide the customer with a simple explanation of both the issue and solution.

What are some of the challenges you help customers with?

A common query we get from customers is regarding the alert email they received from our software. Our software automatically detects issues with the customer’s server and an alert is sent to them. They then contact our SRE team to assist with the issue.

Why do you enjoy working at Nutanix?

Nutanix provides opportunities for me to grow in my career, providing me with access to resources that allow me to learn and gain more knowledge. Working for a global company allows me to interact with teams outside of Japan and to learn about different cultures.

Besides that, knowing that our company places an emphasis and value on our support team makes me enjoy my work even more. Nutanix truly understands that our customer support differentiates us and brings sales to the company through our service reputation and word of mouth.

How has working remotely during the pandemic been for you?

There are pros and cons to working remotely and one of the advantages to it is being able to save time and money on commuting. The time saved allows me to have more personal time and time with my family. In Nutanix, our wellbeing is always taken care of and I have a better work-life balance and flexibility.

I do, however, miss the interaction with my team and colleagues in the office, especially attending the office events. My favourite events in the Japan office are our annual holiday party and our New Year's Eve party which I look forward to each year.

What are some of your hobbies?

On weekends, I like to head to the driving range to play golf. On most days, I spend my time exercising, especially when staying at home has caused me to gain some weight. Working at home has given me back pain issues so I also do stretching exercises to help with that.

I’m interested in improving my English too and I practice with my friend in Australia where we converse from time to time in English and at times, I teach him Japanese.

What would you do for work if you weren’t doing this?

I would love to be a developer and to create my own programme. This is a goal that I hope to achieve in the near future.

What is one thing you can’t live without?

Being passionate about what I do is something that I can’t imagine living without. To me, passion is what keeps me focused and interested, just as how I've been working as an SRE for a long time and still enjoy the role.
