Dramatic Increase in Remote Workforce

Working from home, or is it living at work?  Nearly everyone has been affected, either directly or indirectly, by the shift to remote work.

Although remote work had been increasingly common, the pandemic caused a spike that has fundamentally altered attitudes by both employees and employers. FlexJobs.com reports that “a Gartner survey of company leaders found that 80% plan to allow employees to work remotely at least part of the time after the pandemic, and 47% will allow employees to work from home full-time. In a PwC survey of 669 CEOs, 78% agree that remote collaboration is here to stay for the long-term. In a recent FlexJobs survey, 65% of respondents report wanting to be full-time remote employees post-pandemic, and 31% want a hybrid remote work environment—that’s 96% who desire some form of remote work.”

Need for Ease and Speed in Deployment of End User Computing

IT departments across the globe are adjusting to this ongoing trend with significant investment in infrastructure to support end user computing, or simply “EUC.” Not only were call center personnel sent home and outfitted with client devices, but other office workers were also added to remote access requirements. The operating images and applications for these client devices are often hosted on infrastructure in the datacenter in an approach known as Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). Vendors such as Citrix provide software that brokers between the client devices and the backend infrastructure hosting the client images and applications. Alternatively, the broker software could be hosted in the public cloud using a software-as-a-service (SaaS) offering such as Nutanix Frame. Suppliers who could deliver client devices, datacenter infrastructure, or cloud-based infrastructure instantly were in high demand.

Lenovo and Nutanix fit this profile quite well.  According to Gartner, Lenovo is one of the world’s largest PC vendors. Lenovo has a broad array of client devices, from traditional and laptop PCs to tablets and mobile phones. In addition, Lenovo’s Data Center server offerings are among the top 5 in the world, providing a broad portfolio of server models tailored to handle a variety of enterprise IT workloads.  Furthermore, to ease the deployment and operation of the datacenter infrastructure, Lenovo has partnered with Nutanix, the leading provider of hyperconverged infrastructure software (HCI) used for private and hybrid cloud deployments.  Lastly, both Lenovo and Nutanix offer consulting services, such as Nutanix Xpert Services for Virtual Desktop Modernization to help customers ensure optimal deployment and operation.

Nutanix-based Lenovo hyperconverged systems quickly adapt to capacity and performance needs for rapid infrastructure rollouts to support remote workers. In fact, customers such as FNCB Bank in the United States, Fraser Health Authority in Canada, Leonteq in Switzerland, Ashkelon Academic College in Israel, and Lang’s Building Supplies in Australia rely upon Lenovo and Nutanix for their EUC needs.

Match Expense to Usage and Bypass Long Term Commitment

Lenovo and Nutanix have the proven depth of capability to provide for these growing EUC needs. The dilemma for many IT departments was choosing the best way to pay for this ramp-up of client devices and backend infrastructure. Securing a new budget for capital can be daunting.  Also, as vaccinations roll out globally a growing portion of the workforce may return from home to work in the office again -- which raises the question of what to do with all the additional client devices and back-end infrastructure that was purchased in 2020-2021 to handle the work-from-home spike?

Lenovo TruScale for Hosted Desktops with Nutanix

To address these challenges, Lenovo and Nutanix jointly announced on April 20, 2021 “Lenovo TruScale for Hosted Desktops with Nutanix.” This offering provides the Lenovo client devices with easy-to-operate backend server infrastructure--Lenovo ThinkAgile HX systems integrated with Nutanix software--while allowing customers to pay for the whole kit from desktops to datacenter equipment on a monthly basis through Lenovo’s TruScale infrastructure services. No more having to buy it all upfront and live with the lifetime ownership of 3 - 7 years of useful life.   When employees return from home to the office, you can simply return the gear you no longer need and lower your monthly bill accordingly (minimum three year commitment required).

One Number to Call

Another big advantage of this solution is that you only have one source to call for questions or support. Lenovo TruScale for Hosted Desktops with Nutanix minimizes bouncing between vendors with your inquiries -- Lenovo handles it all. This state of the art, complete desktop to datacenter offering makes it easy to achieve the increased productivity and employee satisfaction of remote work.
