When VMware's licensing costs threatened to quadruple after Broadcom’s 2023 acquisition of the IT infrastructure software company, Yew Wei Kee faced a decision that would reshape MSIG Asia's entire IT strategy. As vice president of technology solutions for the Asia-Pacific insurance giant, he could accept the big cost increase or find a better way forward.

"We made the switch to [Nutanix] AHV after facing a fourfold increase in renewal costs with Broadcom's VMware," Kee recalled in a case study interview recorded at .NEXT 2025 in Washington DC.

"AHV [hypervisor] is free and offers comparable features, so it was a straightforward decision to avoid future cost hikes."

MSIG, one of Asia's leading general insurance brands, is a member of the MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings Inc. and a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Co. Ltd., boasting a robust credit rating of A+ Stable. With over 40,000 employees and presence in 48 countries and regions globally, the Group is amongst the world’s top non-life insurance groups based on gross revenue.

What started as a cost-saving measure for MSIG evolved into something more transformative. By April 2025, Kee explains that their IT team had migrated approximately 2,000 virtual machines from VMware to Nutanix AHV. Nutanix Prism became the unified management console across multiple environments. In addition to significant savings, Kee’s team gained agility and efficiency by freeing up resources, enabling them to invest in the company’s AI roadmap and digital transformation initiatives.

"It wasn't just the cost of VMware licensing; we wanted to work with a provider like Nutanix whose approach is customer-centric to build a long-term relationship,” Kee explained.

"Having Prism as a single pane of glass gives my team a lot of support. They can manage all our environments through a single interface without having to jump around."

From Cost Savings to Innovation Acceleration

MSIG Asia reduced its data center footprint, lowering hardware and power consumption costs.

"We removed hardware from our secondary site, helping IT get aligned better with our sustainability strategy," Kee said.

The simplified infrastructure freed up IT staff to focus on higher-value work.

"Nutanix's single-pane-of-glass management has improved our overall IT productivity, freeing up valuable resources to focus on other development projects," Kee explains.

"Staff can complete disaster recovery testing and other processes with a single click via the Prism interface."

This newfound efficiency enabled MSIG Asia to accelerate its digital transformation agenda.

"It is easy for us to scale up using Nutanix, enabling us to serve the business better," said Kee, "Nutanix is helping our business to accelerate digital transformation and look for opportunities to streamline processes and drive innovation."

For him, “the biggest factor isn’t the cost savings, it's the seamless integration and Nutanix being customer-centric."

Looking ahead, he said MSIG Asia has completed tests of Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) and added the Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) to its roadmap for deploying and managing Kubernetes clusters across hybrid environments.

"One of the key factors for working with Nutanix is the company's evolving ecosystem of solutions that help us adopt newer technologies like microservices in a simplified and compliant way," Kee said.

"We didn't just want to adopt technology but use it to simplify business processes and create space for innovation."

The bigger challenge before we migrate to Nutanix is we need to maintain the traditional three tiers legacy system, which is very complex as well as difficult to manage. We're already moving from VMware to Nutanix. So my team just completed the process in early April. So we have managed to migrate all our VMware workloads to Nutanix today. They have completed everything without any service disruption to our business. So I think this is a great achievement. I want to shout our thanks to Nutanix teams to help us on this journey.

The single good benefits after migrating to AHV Nutanix—it provided us with simple management as well as great customer service and the entire ecosystem and the partnership with the service provider. This gives us peace of mind. My team can and have more time to do the more meaningful projects.
Yeah, we do see the performance increase, especially in the database performance as well as the backup performance. We want to move away from the traditional replication strategy, which is where you have primary and secondary side, then you deploy two clusters to do the replication. So instead of that, we are actually backing up our virtual machine to a public cloud. So when we want to perform the disaster recovery test, it's just a few clicks away, then we can build the workload. We tested this in last year. Everything went well. So now this is in our pipeline.

My advice to the organization still thinking whether to fully migrate to AHV Nutanix is to act as soon as possible. This will definitely help them in terms of managing their cost. So not to worry about the technology because Nutanix AHV is actually one of the most stable systems I have worked with, as well as the Nutanix team will always be there to provide you with good customer service.
