Nutanix and Google Cloud Expand Partnership Delivering Apps and Desktops as a Service

July 24, 2020 | min

Google Cloud and Nutanix have been working together for several years to enable the best possible user experience for apps and desktops that are streamed from the cloud. Nutanix Xi Frame integrates directly with Chrome Browser, Chrome OS, Google Drive, Sign in with Google, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). And now, beyond the technical integrations, both of our customer-facing organizations are collaborating closely to work with our joint customers to enable their desktop and application virtualization initiatives.

As part of an expansion of our partnership this summer, Nutanix will partner with Google Cloud to help address the surge in demand for work-from-home solutions with cloud-based delivery of desktops and apps with Xi Frame. In support of this expansion, we have collaborated to build Google Cloud-specific interactive training on Xi Frame Desktop as a Service (DaaS) solutions for sales engineers, solution architects, and account managers. This includes hands-on labs, reference architectures, and solution guides — all developed with the goal of making it as easy as possible for customers to quickly stand up their Xi Frame deployments with direct support from both companies.

In addition to technical enablement, we have established a process for our worldwide sales and solution architecture teams to co-sell and collaborate around the close support of our joint customers. This represents an important next step forward in our expanding partnership as we called out in our joint launch of GCP support by Xi Frame last November (see Nutanix and Google Cloud blogs from the launch).

“Enabling remote access and connectivity for distributed teams is top of mind for virtually every organization,” said Manvinder Singh, Director, Partnerships at Google Cloud. “We’re partnering with Nutanix to help ensure these organizations can deploy Nutanix Xi Frame on Google Cloud, enabling them to run remote applications from anywhere and on any device.”

Update on Google + Nutanix Integrations

Nutanix Xi Frame has been a Google Cloud Technology Partner and Google Chrome Enterprise Technology Partner for several years due to the easy-to-use integrations that our customers love. Our current list of Google integrations include:

  • Detection of a user connecting from Chrome Browser and automatically setting streaming parameters to optimize performance (no downloads or plug-ins required)
  • Direct integration with Google Chromebooks and Chromeboxes let users launch Windows apps directly from the Chrome OS shelf
  • Integrations with Google Drive and Google Drive File Stream let users work and collaborate seamlessly with their files in Frame sessions, even with non-persistent desktops
  • Authentication integrations with Sign-in with Google (OAUTH) or SAML2 let users log in to Frame using Google as the identity provider
  • Support of running DaaS VMs in Google Cloud Platform now expanded to 23 regions worldwide

Beyond further expansion to more Google Cloud regions, the most recent update to the above list of integrations is the switch to using Progressive Web App (PWA) technology for our Chrome OS device support. This replaces the previous solution based on the Chrome Web Store, which Google is shifting away from in favor of the more modern, cross-platform PWA approach. With PWA technology, Xi Frame can stream Windows apps onto any device (Chrome OS, Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, etc.) through what appears to the user as a locally installed app. PWA apps are easy to install by end users thanks to the automatic creation of a PWA URL by the Xi Frame platform. Users can simply paste the link into a Chrome Browser on their device and they are presented with a one-click install option.
