The Impact of AI on the CIO Role

Nutanix recently hosted an exclusive new Masterclass titled The Impact of AI on the CIO Role for C-level and executive IT leaders.

The session led by Nutanix featured distinguished speakers Dr. Art Langer, Associate Vice Provost at Northeastern University, and Ursula Soritsch-Renier, Group Chief Digital and Information Officer at Saint-Gobain.

The Masterclass provided deep insights into how AI is transforming the CIO role, enterprise operations and industry landscapes. Several crucial AI strategies for CIOs and IT executives are shown below.

AI as a Strategic Business Driver

AI is evolving from a back-office efficiency tool to a strategic business enabler. CIOs must now act as business architects to align AI initiatives with enterprise goals.

AI serves a dual role: As a driver that transforms customer relationships and business models and as a supporter that enhances internal processes. This duality requires CIOs to rebrand their roles, communicate AI risks and benefits clearly, and ensure data strategies are tied to business outcomes.

The Data Explosion and AI Readiness

The Masterclass highlighted the exponential growth of structured and unstructured data – from IoT sensors and wearables to consumer behavior and geographic data. This data explosion, combined with advancements in computing power and open-source software, has made AI adoption feasible and essential.

Executives are increasingly interested in leveraging machine learning to extract insights, identify competitive advantages and formulate new strategies. Downward pressure on the cost of compute power and data storage further accelerates this trend.

The S-Curve of Disruption

AI disruption follows an accelerated S-curve lifecycle. Organizations must be agile and proactive while recognizing that timing and averting risk are critical. Deploying the right AI solution at the right time can yield significant competitive advantages or expose vulnerabilities.

The Masterclass emphasized that the world is changing at an accelerating rate and CIOs must be prepared to navigate this disruption.

Saint-Gobain’s AI Transformation Journey

Ursula Soritsch-Renier shared Saint-Gobain’s journey in leveraging AI to drive digital transformation in the construction industry. Key wins include:

  • Dryer 4.0: Machine learning reduced gas consumption across multiple gypsum plants.
  • Digital Twins: Used for energy savings whileachieving reduction in CO₂ emissions.
  • Galileo Forecasting: Improved forecasting accuracy by double digit  across many sites.
  • GenAI use cases including Legal and HR chatbots: Reduced document review time by 7x and saved 50 emails per month. Voice-of-customer analysis transformed 200 daily calls into actionable insights in minutes.

Frameworks for Scaling AI

Saint-Gobain’s approach to scaling AI includes a strong digital foundation with a scalable data architecture, principles of re-use and adaptation, and a structured adoption plan.

The plan features top-down communication, cascading rollouts, and an AI ambassador network to raise awareness and provide key insights. The company also developed an AI portal and starter kits to support deployment.

GenAI: The Next Frontier

GenAI is revolutionizing content creation, enabling the generation of text, images, music, audio, and video. Unlike traditional AI, GenAI is flexible, user-friendly and accessible to a broader audience. It offers three key value drivers, according to Soritsch-Renier:

  • Individual productivity gains.
  • Collective productivity improvements.
  • Potential to invent new business models for long-term advantage.

CIO Action Plan: Rebranding the Role

To lead in the AI era, CIOs must redefine their roles by embracing AI as a driver and supporter. Communicate the risks and benefits of GenAI, instill confidence by understanding AI and related issues, and align data strategies with business objectives. Benchmarking against industry peers and competitors is essential to stay ahead.
