2025 U.S. Federal Government Enterprise Cloud Index Report: Key Findings

The 7th annual Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Index (ECI) reveals that GenAI adoption and containerization within the US Federal Government is progressing, but at a slower pace than in other industries and public sector segments.

Based on survey responses from IT and platform decision-makers in the federal space, key insights include:

GenAI adoption trails peers: Just 77% of US Federal organizations are using GenAI today, well below the global average of 98% and public sector average of 94%.
Data security, privacy and IT skills gaps are major concerns: 74% of respondents say their organization could do more to secure GenAI models and apps.
Infrastructure modernization is critical: 81% of federal respondents say their IT infrastructure needs improvement to support cloud-native apps, and 83% say the same for GenAI workloads.
Containerization adoption is slower, but growing: 85% are at least in the process of containerizing apps, lagging behind the public sector average of 96%. However, 79% agree cloud-native approaches bring clear benefits, from modernizing legacy systems to accelerating new app development.
