On December 9th, 2020 Nutanix announced that Rajiv Ramaswami was joining as the company’s new President and CEO, effective December 9, 2020. It came as a surprise to many who follow the private, hybrid, and multicloud computing company. Industry publications covered the news swiftly, focusing on the experience Ramasawami brings to the 11-year-old company that pioneered hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) and is helping companies evolve their IT for the hybrid and multicloud future.

Prior to joining Nutanix, Ramaswami was chief operating officer (COO) of Products and Cloud Services at VMware. His career spans three decades, including leadership roles at Cisco, IBM, Nortel, and Broadcom.

“I have long admired Nutanix as a pioneer in hyperconverged infrastructure solutions and a leader in cloud software,” said Ramaswami.

The search for a new CEO was announced in August 2020, after Nutanix co-founder, CEO and Chairman Dheeraj Pandey decided to retire from the company. Pandey helped grow the startup into a billion dollar company. He and other Nutanix board members looked across the IT industry before choosing Ramaswami.

“Rajiv is the right leader at the right time,” said Nutanix co-founder Dheeraj Pandey. “With a future-proof business model, a loyal and expanding customer base, and a strong technology portfolio, I look forward to seeing Rajiv take the helm to lead this incredible team. This is the decade to watch for a company that so values simple, secure, and seamless.”

During his first week at Nutanix, Ramaswami sat down with Pandey for podcast segment in which the two talked about the pivotal moment in their lives and for the future of the company.

Joining Nutanix

Ramaswami posted on Twitter and LinkedIn accounts the excitement he felt on the day he joined Nutanix.

He described his admiration for Pandey and Nutanix’s transition to a software subscription model.

“2021 brings the next stage in Nutanix’s evolution and transition to a software subscription model, reinforcing our leadership position in hyperconverged infrastructure and advancing our leadership in multicloud infrastructure,” Ramaswami said.

“All while innovating and creating customer value in new and adjacent areas, as well as deepening our investment and commitment to our partners. Our strong culture of innovation is key to the next decade.”

Ramaswami said he first learned about Nutanix around 2010, when Pandey pitched his company’s service at an industry event. In an interview with CRN, Ramaswami said he was tasked with reaching the next billion and beyond.

“Working closely with the Board, the management team, and the more than 6,000 talented Nutanix employees around the world, we will build on Nutanix’s strong foundation of continuous innovation, collaboration, and customer delight.”

He said he would devote a lot of time to meeting with customers and partners, calibrating ways to help customers improve and speed their digital transformation efforts.
