Acropolis Container Services (ACS) provides the ability to easily deploy and manage containerized applications on the Nutanix platform while offering enterprise-class persistent storage for containers. ACS includes two core capabilities, persistent container volumes and the Nutanix Docker machine driver, which together simplify the process of building a Docker-based container environment on the Nutanix enterprise cloud platform.

Containers are gaining rapid adoption due to the benefits they offer in terms of agility, portability and increased capacity efficiencies. For container technologies to become relevant for enterprise applications, they need to provide enterprise-class persistent storage for containerized applications.

ACS gives businesses the ability to provide persistent and resilient storage for their containerized stateful applications such as databases and web caches. Persistent container volumes are backed by iSCSI block storage on the Acropolis Distributed Storage Fabric (DSF) through the Nutanix Acropolis volume plugin for Docker, and get all the benefits of Acropolis DSF such as deduplication, compression, tiering and erasure coding. Moreover, due to the distributed nature of Acropolis DSF, containers can access the storage volumes from anywhere within the cluster and are not confined to a single host. This makes the storage service highly resilient and enables mobility across hosts. The Nutanix Docker machine driver allows developers to quickly and easily spin up Docker hosts on the Nutanix clusters to build and run their containerized stateful applications.

A common enterprise grade platform that supports both virtualized and containerized environments eliminates the painful tradeoff in DevOps environments between using virtualization for applications requiring persistent storage and containerization for others, and allows IT teams and developers to pick the best technology according to their needs without creating operational and infrastructure silos.
