NTT DATA Implements Nutanix Enterprise Cloud to Simplify IT Operations, Improve Performance and Reduce TCO

Systems Integration Realizes 50-100 Percent Improvement on Application Performance

Tokyo, Japan. – April 21, 2016 – Nutanix, a leading enterprise cloud company, today announced that NTT DATA has selected the Nutanix enterprise cloud solution for its system to automate management and to increase IT efficiency in line with the company’s growth in size and complexity. The Nutanix enterprise cloud platform was implemented to improve application performance by 50 to 100 percent and to reduce rack spaces from 75U to 15U. Furthermore, the new solution delivered non-disruptive system maintenances and upgrades, cost reduction for datacenters, simplified operation management, and improved service quality.

As Japan’s leading system integrator, NTT DATA Corporation alone has approximately 11,000 employees, and a total of 80,000 employees across the global NTT DATA Group companies in 42 regions and 180 cities worldwide.

Along with several expansions of the systems, NTT DATA had accumulated various server types, specifications, and operating systems. As a result, the System Management Group was tasked to realize automated systems, efficient operations and reduction of total cost of ownership (TCO), while maintaining, or improving, the quality of the system maintenance and operation.

“We had set the goal of reducing 15 percent of operational workloads for corporate information system including operation and maintenance for virtual desktop environment,” said Yusaku Nakajima, Senior Manager of IT Management Office.

Koichi Okuno, Manager of System Management Group said: “Web-scale and hyperconverged infrastructure are interesting concepts. One of our tasks as an IT division of a technology company is to positively contribute to our business growth and profitability. Our business scheme is to research and implement the leading-edge technologies for ourselves that can be introduced to our clients as a model case. Nutanix has provided us with a highly innovative technology platform for datacenter infrastructure.”

Simplicity for Implementation and Operation through Advanced Technology

NTT DATA has three main reasons for selecting Nutanix for its environment:

“The first was simplicity of implementation. I was pleasantly surprised that the system configuration was so simple. The Nutanix appliances were easy to implement, as they required only a few clicks for system settings to be completed,” said Satoru Okuno, Deputy Manager of System Management Group.

“The second was simplicity of operation. We were looking for a solution that could be operated by members of staff without specific IT skills. This enabled us to assign high-level experts to design new services to increase our IT capabilities, so we are able to put a ‘Transformation by IT’ approach into action,” emphasized Koichi Okuno.

“The third was the advanced technology. In addition to the state of the art technology of a hyperconverged infrastructure, we have seen the Nutanix solution deliver higher performance and operational workload reduction without requiring manual revision,” said Satoru Okuno.

The new Nutanix solution offers NTT DATA the following advantages:

  1. Cost reduction through less rack use: Rack space was reduced from 75U to 15U. This counts for an 80 percent reduction in space, which also leads to datacenter cost reductions.
  2. Reduction in management burden through server consolidation: “With Nutanix, all nodes can be managed as one. Until now, 35 servers and six storage devices were managed individually, but by using the integrated management tool, Nutanix Prism, we are able to manage everything centrally, which reduced our management burden,” said Satoru Okuno.
  3. Improved service quality: “The disk I/O performance was also improved by almost fivefold. The desktop and software responsiveness have improved by 50 to 100 percent” said Satoru Okuno.

“Without the introduction of Nutanix, the goal of a 15 percent reduction of operational workloads in a few months would not have been achieved,” recognized Koichi Okuno. “It all comes down to the word ‘easy’. Implementation was easy and operation is easy,” added Satoru Okuno.

As for future developments, Nakajima said, “We are now promoting the Nutanix solution to all of our clients with confidence, demonstrating the many advantages we have verified during our own implementation.”

IT Management Office to NTT DATA is actively incorporating leading-edge technology for achieving a Transformation by IT approach. As one of those leading-edge technologies, Nutanix is contributing to the expansion of the group businesses.
