As data volume continues to explode, organizations now measure their structured data storage in petabytes, not terabytes. Seeking to modernize database estates and improve efficiency, organizations around the world continue to move workloads to the public cloud. However, the large majority of relational databases are still deployed on prem.

To understand trends in database deployments and the challenges of hybrid cloud database management, IDC, a leading provider of global IT research and advice, recently surveyed 800 senior-level IT professionals from around the world.

The survey, sponsored by Nutanix and Intel, found:

  • 75% of relational database management system deployments are in private cloud
  • Database services are the #1 use case for public cloud and #2 for hybrid cloud
  • 73% of organizations have different database management processes for on-prem vs. cloud deployments
  • 63% of organizations believe common database management across deployments would be “very” or “extremely” beneficial
