Moving the Nutanix-Citrix Product Integration for AHV to the Next Level

Last year, Nutanix announced an exciting partnership with Citrix, intended to deliver our mutual customers the best possible Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop experience at the most optimal price point, leveraging the integrated AHV hypervisor within the Nutanix Acropolis platforms. Over the past few months we’ve had several customers leverage this turnkey integration, that makes the hypervisor truly invisible, allowing IT teams to focus on the Citrix workloads – reducing cost and operations complexity.

Following up on the success of this engagement, Citrix and Nutanix jointly announced at Synergy in Las Vegas the new InstantON VDI platform, that aims to offer an extremely compelling price point of under $500 for a user’s Citrix VDI instance, including hardware, software and 3-years of support, accounting for all the product cost of delivering virtual desktops to users. Earlier this week, we made the integration of Nutanix clusters running AHV even simpler, by directly integrating with the XenDesktop Studio UI. This makes the life of a Citrix administrator extremely simple, by allowing a very streamlined process for the entire lifecycle of Citrix on Nutanix. Use the Citrix consoles – Studio and Director – for all Citrix functionalities of provisioning desktops, updating images, setting up desktop profiles etc., and use the power of Prism for non-Citrix management actions.

With the release of the integration, customers running Citrix on Nutanix, looking to simplify environments by leveraging the embedded AHV runtime on Acropolis, can install the integration DLL within Citrix Desktop Delivery Controllers, provide the cluster details to connect to from the Citrix management environment, and within minutes be up and running with the use of AHV clusters for Machine Catalog and Hosting Unit creation.

Combined with this simplicity, is the power of Citrix Machine Creation Services, which allows for speedy provisioning and machine update operations, leveraging the storage-native operations that comes from how the Nutanix Distributed Storage Fabric (DSF) interoperates with the App Mobility Fabric (AMF). Updating the base image is a simple operation of making whatever changes need to be made, and taking another snapshot from Prism, with a name that indicates what the base image updates are – making it immediately possible within the XenDesktop Studio to look at all available snapshots of the base image, to pick and choose, whichever image needs to be targeted for either bulk updates of user VMs, or targeted updates for test/ validation efforts.

All other benefits of running Citrix on Nutanix continue to accrue even in the AHV case, with things like Shadow Clones, Data Tiering, Flash Mode, Integrated DR etc, allowing for a low-risk and high-performance Citrix environment to be built and managed, at extremely attractive total cost of ownership.
