Illumio Brings Visibility 2.0 to .NEXT

I sat down with Bryan Pelham, Senior Director of Business Development at Illumio, to find out more about Illumio’s approach to visibility and security inside the data center, and what the company is planning to do at this month’s .NEXT conference.

For folks who haven’t yet encountered Illumio, how would you describe what the company does?

Illumio provides visibility and security for the insides of data centers and clouds. Simply put, enterprises using Illumio can do three things:

  1. See a visual, real-time map of the inside of their data centers and clouds, including all communication paths.
  2. Write security policies for all of their applications using natural language.
  3. Segment their data center down to the most granular level, making it difficult for threats that do make their way inside the data center to spread laterally.

What are some of the IT challenges you’re seeing your customers face?

One of the key challenges we’re seeing is that security teams don’t know enough about what’s actually happening inside their data centers. Visibility is a hot topic these days, but not all visibility is created equal. Most of the visibility tools out there show you a static network topology, which has its utility, but it doesn’t give you the level of information you need to secure your distributed data center in real time, as things adapt and move.

As an example, one of our customers decommissioned a backup server several months ago, but once they ran our Illumination service in the data center and got a visual graph of all their communication paths, they realized that there were active flows going to and from that server. It hadn’t been truly decommissioned after all.

Can you give our audience a sneak peek of what you’re going to be talking about at .NEXT?

I’m presenting a session on Data Center & Cloud Visualization on Wednesday, June 22, at 1pm. I’ll be doing a live demo of the Illumio Adaptive Security Platform, highlighting its visualization capabilities. The platform shows really well live because the visual map responds in real time to changes in the data center. I’ll also be showing how the Illumio solution complements Nutanix installations. The goal is to have a truly interactive session that lets attendees walk away with actionable steps to see and better secure their data center and cloud.

We also have a couple other things going on at the conference. Alan Cohen, our Chief Commercial Officer, will be part of a panel called “Social Media Secrets to Establishing and Protecting Your Brand at 1pm on Tuesday, June 21. And, at the Illumio booth (No. G12), we’ll be available to talk to conference attendees and demo the product for them.

What are you excited to do at .NEXT?

I look forward to the conversations with attendees. These are the people on the front lines of designing, building, and operating the compute infrastructure and there is a lot I can learn from them. Customer input is the foundation of our product. By listening to our customers we make sure we are building the tools they need to solve the real problems they face on a daily basis.
