HIMSS 2018 over so what’s .NEXT!

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” – Walt Disney

One of the largest healthcare IT shows, HIMSS 2018 wrapped up in Las Vegas back in the first week of March and as expected over 1300 companies exhibited in the areas such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, clinical workflows, and interoperability. Nutanix was one of the exhibitors at the show where we showcased our industry-leading enterprise cloud offerings around optimizing applications and workloads in the areas of EHR/EMR, PACs, and data analytics. The show floor was buzzing with excitement and we are very thankful to our customers and partners for their continued trust in us.

Having attended HIMSS for the last 12 years (yes that is not a typo), I continue to marvel how far the healthcare IT industry has come along and yet at the same time reminded of how much more needs to be done in order to continue with the digital transformation across the continuum of care. Looking back at the conference some of the key takeaways include:

  1. Increased appetite for a cloud-based consumption model
  2. Predictive analytics is becoming more mainstream in terms of driving both operational improvements and clinical decisions
  3. Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning has a lot of hype right now, but is starting to address some real use cases in the industry (e.g. fall prevention, early-detection of cancer tumors)
  4. Telehealth/virtual healthcare seeing widespread adoption
  5. Increased emphasis on the overall healthcare delivery model (as it should be)

I could touch on several others, but really want to emphasis on the cloud-based model as that is the destination for seemingly every care provider (acute and/or ambulatory), for everything. According to MarketsandMarkets report, the global healthcare cloud computing market is forecasted to grow to $9.48 billion by 2020. Over the past few years, the healthcare industry has really embraced the cloud platform and most of it is being driven by workload-intensive applications such as EHR/EMR, PACs, and more recently by emerging use cases in the areas of genomics and clinical trials. Major EMR and PACs companies are pushing a cloud-based model as it gives customers more options in terms of managing their total costs of ownership (TCO). Nutanix continues to work closely with a number of healthcare customers and partners such as Epic, Cerner, Meditech, Fujifilm, and others to foster continued innovation to not only improve productivity for the healthcare organizations but to also help them from an operational efficiency standpoint.

While HIMSS 2018 is over, we continue to move forward in our journey of driving innovative approaches to solving our customers problems. Here are couple of examples from CarePoint Health and Baylor Scott & White Health as to how they are leveraging Nutanix enterprise cloud platform to drive transformation in their respective organizations.

So, what’s .NEXT?

From May 8th -10th, we are hosting the .NEXT Conference in New Orleans and healthcare is one of the featured verticals at the event. Besides some very cool immersive healthcare demos, we will also have a dedicated healthcare session on Wednesday, May 9th, which will cover the technical details and best practices for enabling customers to successfully deploy their critical EMR/EHR and PACs workloads on the Nutanix cloud platform. Attendees will also get to hear first-hand from some of our customers on their experiences and lessons learned.

I firmly believe that the cloud-based consumption model is going to accelerate over the next few years and is going to become a mission-critical tool that can help healthcare organizations transform major aspects of their business – foster rapid innovation, impactful patient engagement, and yes even laying the foundation for the emerging wave of artificial intelligence.
