File Restoration on Your Terms with Enterprise Cloud Self Service File Restore

Today at the .NEXT On-Tour, we are bringing continuous innovation to the Big Apple, New York City. Simple, integrated backup should be at the core of every Enterprise Cloud strategy. Not only does Nutanix include the ability to take an unlimited number of local VM snapshots, but our software give users the ability to replicate them to a remote site or a public cloud service like Amazon Web Services for additional protection. While granular, enterprise-grade, recovery point objectives (RPO) and retention policies provide the flexibility to back up applications when and where you want, this is only half of the equation. This protection is useless without the ability to easily restore data and meet the recovery time objectives (RTO) of your business.

Fortunately, high-levels of availability and resiliency in the event of component, node, or rack failure make major incidents infrequent for Nutanix administrators. Other threats to data integrity like accidental deletion and file overwrites are present in any environment. Users have come to depend on technology that empowers them so that they can recover without depending on their colleagues or IT. With this in mind, Nutanix is planning to debut in the Asterix software release, the ability for users to easily perform self service mounting of VM snapshots and restore files without the intervention of administrators.

This planned functionality builds upon the Nutanix Guest Tools (NGT) technology introduced in the AOS 4.6 release and adds a new browser-based UI. Some proposed features include:

  • The ability to see all current VM snapshots
  • The ability to see disks captured within each VM snapshot, including the original drive letters assigned to each disk
  • The ability to mount and unmount a particular snapshot
  • The ability to see a list of mounted snapshots, including the mapping(s) of original drive letter -> current drive letter

Best of all, users can benefit from Nutanix’s built-in access control design that can follow organizational structural hierarchy and give differentiated access to user data. This granular access eliminates blanket policies that cover everyone without any real rhyme or reason and enables people to have just enough access to the data needed to do their job. This can be particularly beneficial in departmental or multi-tenant environments and is designed to be available without additional configuration.

Self Service File restore can give one-click, consumer-grade, control of snapshots and data back to owners and once again shrink the infrastructure burden on administrators. Help desk calls to restore documents, spreadsheets, or any other application is another step closer to finally being a thing of the past!
