Commvault Heads to .NEXT

By Fiona Partlow

An Interview with Greg White, Director of Global Alliance Marketing at Commvault

We recently caught up with Greg White, Director of Alliance Marketing at Commvault, to talk about the Commvault and Nutanix partnership and his expectations for the upcoming .NEXT conference. Here are some of the highlights of our conversation.

Q. What is your role at Commvault? What areas or projects you are responsible for?

I work with Nutanix and our other key alliance partners to develop our go-to-market strategy, ensuring that we create valuable channel programs that serve our mutual customers’ needs. Our goal is to leverage what Nutanix provides from an infrastructure perspective, to bring that kind of simplicity and scalability to data management.

Q. What are Commvault’s key areas of expertise?

Commvault is solely dedicated to data management. Our solutions address how people protect, access, comply, and share their data. We work across all of the infrastructure locations where data is stored ‒ whether it’s disk, tape, or cloud ‒ to provide better understanding around that data. We want to make sure that it easier and faster for our customers to use that data in new ways to drive greater business outcomes.

Q. What IT and business challenges are your customers facing?

Most of our customers are dealing with high data growth and increasing virtualization. Many clients have adopted a ‘virtualized first’ approach for their datacenters, but that can add complexity into what they do with their data and how they manage that environment. Business continuity requirements are also increasing. Companies need the ability to recover faster, with no downtime for their key business and enterprise applications, including MS SQL Server, Exchange, Oracle, and SAP. Many of our customers are also moving to enterprise clouds, and need help managing data in that new paradigm.

Q. Why did Commvault decide to partner with Nutanix?

Commvault is a leading provider of data management, protection, and archive software solutions that are built on a single, unified platform. Nutanix is the leader in hyperconvergence. Our solutions complement each other quite well. Nutanix delivers everything an enterprise could want when it comes to hyperconverged, virtualized IT infrastructure: high consumability, instant availability, easy automation, and massive scalability. Commvault supports all of that with flexible data management and protection that ensures all the data in the Nutanix environment is easy to access, use, and recover.

As a result of our close partnership, our joint customers are able to get the most out of their Nutanix virtualized infrastructure with converged data management from Commvault. We have worked closely together to integrate our platforms. A prime example of that is bringing the snapshot management piece of Nutanix into the Commvault software. Commvault is also integrated with the Nutanix AHV. We work with AHV the same way we do with VMware vSphere and MS Hyper-V. This enables our customers to protect and manage their data regardless of what hypervisor they choose to use, and then move back and forth between the different platforms securely, safely, and easily.

Q. What are you looking forward to seeing at .NEXT this year?

I am looking forward to hearing how enterprises are changing the way they think about the data center as they adopt the enterprise cloud. I want to hear more about the Nutanix vision and Acropolis—to understand how people are changing their approach to virtualization and the workloads that run within that framework.

Q. Will Commvault be presenting a session at .NEXT this year?

Yes, Peter Laudenslager along with Damian Andre from the Cloud business unit team at Commvault will present a best practices session on Wednesday June 22 at 10:30am. They will describe how you can efficiently and easily migrate different workloads to Nutanix, with in-depth and practical information about platform sizing and migration. And of course, I am looking forward to reconnecting with my peers and talking to our joint customers in Las Vegas this year!
