An Interview with Biju Samuel, Director of IT at Cardlytics
Biju Samuel is the director of IT at Cardlytics. We recently interviewed Biju to ask about his company’s Nutanix implementation, and to see what he has planned for .NEXT. Here are some highlights of our conversation.
What does Cardlytics do?
Cardlytics uses purchase-based intelligence to make marketing more relevant and measurable. We partner with more than 1,500 financial institutions to run their banking rewards programs that promote customer loyalty and deepen banking relationships. In turn, we have a secure view into where and when consumers are spending their money. We use these insights to help marketers identify, reach, and influence likely buyers at scale, as well as measure the true sales impact of marketing campaigns. We see debit, credit, ACH and bill pay spend for tens of millions of individual consumers in the US and UK, without sharing any personally identifiable information.
What IT challenges were you facing before you moved to Nutanix?
We had been using a three-tier IT solution, where we had to purchase servers, storage arrays, and network equipment separately. We found that we were spending far too much time procuring, deploying and integrating the different components. We needed a solution that could not only serve our existing clients, but enable us to scale quickly to support the large number of banks that would be coming onto the network in the near future. Nutanix helped simplify that by being able to give us a solution that enables us to scale quickly and non-disruptively. We can just rack a server, plug it into the network, and expand our capabilities in far less time.
We purchased our first Nutanix systems in October of last year. We chose the Dell XC Series web-scale solutions powered by Nutanix for our hosted environment. Once we submitted the PO, we received the systems in just a few days. With other providers, it always took 2 to 4 weeks to get any hardware in-house. With Nutanix, we not only get equipment faster, we can deploy them more easily, which helps us get our financial institutions online faster.
Will you be attending .NEXT this year?
Yes. I am on one of the panels for financial services. We have also been nominated for an award this year. We will also be attending an executive briefing. We want to talk to the leaders at Nutanix and get an understanding of the technology roadmap. We also want to see how other companies are using the technology, and comparing our experiences with other customers in the Nutanix space.
We are also a member of the Nutanix Technology Champion (NTC) Program in the Georgia region. NTC is an awards program that recognizes Nutanix and web-scale experts for their contributions to the community and industry. It provides us with unique opportunities to further expand our knowledge, amplify our brand, and help shape the future of web-scale IT. I am looking forward to connecting with some of the NTC members for the other regions, find out how they have been using Nutanix, and getting an idea how we can start promote Nutanix even more in our area.
