The Nutanix Approach to Federal IT – Part II

In Part I of this blog, we talked about “the interesting times we live in” regarding the state of Federal IT. The problem is – managing and delivering IT shouldn’t be an adventure. Users would prefer that IT be completely invisible to them. They don’t care if their servers are down the hall or in the “cloud.” They just want to get their work done – dependably, quickly, and securely. For Federal IT, this was codified in the President’s Management Agenda’s top three priorities for government IT policy – improved service delivery and citizen experience, reduced cybersecurity risks, and targeting taxpayer dollars wisely. So, this is the challenge for public sector IT – how do you make the inherently complex, simple?

The Nutanix Approach

Nutanix was founded on the premise of bringing the web-scale engineering that powers internet giants, such as global search and social media sites, to enterprise data centers for traditional workloads. For them, this required removing architectural inefficiencies, designing in security throughout, and radically simplifying management.

  • The first step in removing the architectural inefficiencies of traditional 3-tier silos (compute, storage, and networking) is hyperconvergence – natively integrating two or more components into a single unit which can be easily scaled – incrementally and linearly. Nutanix has been recognized as a leader in this model.
  • Second – software defined intelligence – pulling key logic from hardware and doing it in software on industry standard servers. This eliminates dependence on proprietary hardware and improves lifespan economics.
  • Third – build distributed autonomous systems – distributing roles and responsibilities to all nodes within the system, utilizing concepts like Curator to perform distributed processing of tasks. This eliminates any single points of failure and distributes workloads to remove any bottlenecks. This is Nutanix Acropolis.
  • Finally, provide operational visibility and control through an intuitive distributed management platform that leverages API-based automation and rich analytics to an already self-healing environment. This is 1-click intuitive Nutanix Prism.

So, this is how Nutanix simplifies the complexities of the enterprise datacenter, but what about the public cloud?

As mentioned in Part I, while public clouds offer some interesting benefits under the right conditions, they are not without some drawbacks. Nutanix recently commissioned Vanson Bourne to survey IT decision makers regarding where they run their business applications today and where they expect to run them in the future. Of the over 2300 respondents across all industries, an overwhelming 91% indicated that Hybrid Cloud is the ideal model with cloud interoperability and application mobility as leading factors. After many years of struggling with vendor lock-in in a traditional datacenter, IT executives are not willing to accept a similar fate in the Cloud era.

For reasons such as these, Nutanix is bringing a similar methodology to cloud architectures as it did in hyper-converging traditional datacenter models. Nutanix X-Powered Services Providers and our own Nutanix Xi Cloud Services offer applications mobility and simplified multi-cloud management in a hybrid cloud environment – just as Acropolis and Prism did in the hyper-converged datacenter.

This then is Nutanix’s approach to making the complex – simple, and in turn, making Enterprise IT invisible, and perhaps a little less of an adventure.
