The latest release of the Nutanix Operating System, NOS 4.0 packs new capabilities and enhancements, including end-to-end system analytics and multi-cluster management on the control plane, along with tunable resilience and powerful distributed data services on the data plane. Together, these enhancements deliver the benefits of web-scale IT to tier-1 virtualized datacenter environments.
Cluster Health is a powerful capability in Nutanix Prism platform that gives customers comprehensive, end-to-end visibility of VMs, nodes and disks in the cluster. Cluster Health runs a suite of automatic health checks and proactively flags potential issues in the converged infrastructure stack. An intuitive diagnostic interface gives customers the ability to visually troubleshoot issues by grouping and filtering resources at the VM, host and disk levels, enabling quick investigation and rapid resolution. The result is faster identification and resolution of issues – taking minutes versus hours and days with traditional architectures.
Nutanix customers can now manage many Nutanix clusters across many locations from a single pane of glass using the simple and intuitive Nutanix Prism Central interface. Customers get an aggregate view of health and resources across multiple clusters, allowing them to seamlessly zoom in and manage individual clusters as required. This capability is particularly useful for centrally managing Nutanix clusters in remote or branch offices. In keeping with everything else that Nutanix offers, Prism Central is hypervisor-agnostic, and can be used to manage clusters running different hypervisors including Hyper-V, vSphere and KVM.
One-click Operating System Upgrade
Customers can non-disruptively upgrade Nutanix clusters of any size with zero downtime, automatically. Once the administrator initiates an OS upgrade, a suite of pre-checks is run on the cluster. All the nodes in the cluster are then upgraded in parallel, and reboots are scheduled in sequence. The result is rapid upgrade in a matter of minutes with no downtime and zero touch.
Nutanix Windows PowerShell Toolkit
Nutanix now offers a library of Windows PowerShell Cmdlets built on top of the native REST API. Customers can use these cmdlets to write command line scripts to configure and manage their Nutanix clusters in Windows, vSphere and Hyper-V environments including building custom integration into on-premises Microsoft Azure and VMware vCloud suite.
MapReduce Deduplication is a powerful post-process deduplication capability that can significantly boost the effective capacity of a cluster. Unlike deduplication in traditional storage arrays, MapReduce Deduplication is highly distributed and automatically runs on all nodes in the cluster. As nodes are added to the cluster, the deduplication functionality also linearly scales out.
Data is rapidly fingerprinted at the time it is written with a strong SHA-1 hash. The hashing process leverages performance acceleration offered by Intel processors for SHA-1. A background task then runs automatically on all nodes in the cluster and eliminates duplicates in the storage capacity tier. MapReduce Deduplication, together with real-time performance deduplication already available in the system for the performance tier makes the Virtual Computing Platform ideal for persistent virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) deployments, virtualized server workloads, and for archiving.
A suite of configurable resilience features allows customers to configure different degrees of fault tolerance for applications in the same cluster. Businesses typically demand different levels of resilience for enterprise applications. For example, their ERP application needs to be able to withstand multiple simultaneous hardware failures without loss of service or data, while development environments may have less stringent requirements. With NOS 4.0, customers can now use the same Nutanix cluster for applications with a range of resilience requirements.
True to the underlying principle of software-defined infrastructure, system policies that define which applications get what level of resilience are late-bound and applied dynamically to achieve different levels of resilience and fault tolerance.
Integrated Data Protection
The Nutanix Virtual Computing Platform offers an integrated solution for local on-site backups and remote replication for off-site backup and disaster recovery. The powerful Nutanix Time Stream capability allows unlimited VMCaliber snapshots to be created on a cluster. By mixing capacity-rich NX-6000 series nodes with NX-3000 nodes, customers can economically keep multiple snapshots on their production clusters and rapidly restore state when required. Using Prism, customers can schedule local snapshots and replication tasks, and control retention policies on an individual snapshot basis. An intuitive snapshot browser allows customers to quickly see local and remote snapshots and restore or retrieve a saved snapshot with a single click. WAN traffic for backup and recovery is automatically optimized, allowing DR and remote backups to be completed efficiently, for different environments including those running vSphere or Hyper-V.
